Studies regarding seed maturation are important to determine the ideal fruit development stage for harvesting in order to obtain high-quality seeds. Changes in sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) seed quality were monitored during seed development in order to identify the stage of maximum quality of the seeds and the optimum harvest date. Fruits harvested from 20 to 75 days after anthesis (DAA) with step of five days were grouped according to maturity stage (green, yellow, red and intense red color outside). Before seed extraction, the fruit weigh, diameter and length were determined. Seed water content, seed dry weight, 1.000-seed weight, germination, first count, speed emergence index, seedling length, accelerated aging and electrical conductivity tests were performed. Mass maturity of the seeds was attained at 75 DAA, when seed water content was 47.3 % and the fruits were red. Sweet pepper seeds with high germination and vigour should be harvested when fruits are completely red outside, at 75 DAA
-Physiological quality and vigor of the seeds comprise properties that determine a high level of activity and performance during germination and seedling emergence, having a direct relation with the establishment of the stand of a crop. In this context, the assessment of seedling development, including the analysis of the seed reserves mobilization are a reliable method to investigate the physiological potential of seed lots. In this preliminary study, the aim was to investigate the dynamics of seed reserves mobilization of a sample of soybean commercial cultivars. By means of the seedling length bioassay and weight of dry matter of seeds, cotyledons, hypocotyls and radicles, information on the reserves mobilization during the germination process was obtained. Data were subjected to analysis of variance and Scott and Knott test, and afterwards, phenotypic correlations between traits were obtained. The results have shown that the dry matter of seeds, reserves reduction of seeds and dry matter of seedlings are positively correlated, and thus, seeds containing more reserves may be more effective during the early development of seedlings. In contrast, reserve reduction of seeds and conversion efficiency of the seeds reserves in the dry matter of seedlings are negatively correlated. DORMANCY OVERCOMING IN PAPAYA SEEDSABSTRACT -The objective of this study was to define appropriate treatments to overcome dormancy in papaya seeds. Seeds with and without sarcotesta extracted from papaya fruits of the Formosa group, hybrid Tainung 01, were used. The following treatments to overcome dormancy were applied on seeds without sarcotesta: leaching for 2 and 4h, drying at 40ºC/96h, pre-chilling at 10ºC/14 days, accerelated aging at 41ºC for 36, 48 e 72h, soaking in NaOCl 0,5% for 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5h, soaking in KNO 3 1M for 30, 60, 90 and 120 min., soaking in GA 3 400, 600 and 800 ppm for 24h, substratum moistened with GA 3 400, 600 and 800 ppm, storage for 3, 6 and 9 months and heatshock at 15-35º C. After each treatment, germination at 15 and 30 days was evaluated. Seeds with sarcotesta had lower germination speed and percentage. The best treatments to overcome dormancy in papaya seeds were the use of substratum moistened with GA 3 600 ppm or the immersion of the seeds GA 3 600 ppm for 24 hours and immersion of the seeds in KNO 3 1M for 30, 60 and 90 minutes. Seed dormancy was broken after storage for 3 and 6 months.
Non-destructive and high performance analyses are highly desirable and important for assessing the quality of forest seeds. The aim of this study was to relate parameters obtained from semi-automated analysis of radiographs of Leucaena leucocephala seeds to their physiological potential by means of multivariate analysis. To do so, seeds from five lots collected from parent trees from the region of Viçosa, MG, Brazil, were used. The study was carried out through analysis of radiographic images of seeds, from which the percentage of damaged seeds (predation and fungi), and measurements of area, perimeter, circularity, relative density, and integrated density of the seeds were obtained. After the X-ray test, the seeds were tested for germination in order to assess variables related to seed physiological quality. Multivariate statistics were applied to the data generated, with use of principal component analysis (PCA). X-ray testing allowed visualization of details of the internal structure of seeds and differences regarding density of seed tissues. Semi-automated analysis of radiographic images of Leucaena leucocephala seeds provides information on seed physical characteristics and generates parameters related to seed physiological quality in a simple, fast, and inexpensive manner.
PHYSIOLOGICAL QUALITY OF TOMATO SEEDS IN RELATION TO FRUIT AGE AND POST-HARVEST STORAGEABSTRACT -The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of age and post-harvest storage period of tomato fruits (Kada cv, Santa Cruz group) on seed quality. Fruits were harvested at 40, 50 and 60 DAA and stored for 0, 4, 8 and 12 days before seed extraction. The seeds were fermented for two days at 25ºC to remove the mucilage. The following characteristics were evaluated: seed moisture and dry matter content, standard germination, first count, speed emergence index, accelerated aging and electrical conductivity. The post-harvest storage of fruits harvested at 60 DAA reduced the seed quality. For the fruits harvested at 50 DAA, 8 days-storage contributed to increasing the speed of emergence. Early harvest (40 DAA) was beneficial to physiological seed quality, when related to post harvest fruit storage for 12 days.
-Ormosia arborea, a Leguminosae, presents seeds with tegumentary dormancy. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of dormancy breaking methods, characterize seeds obtained from different mother plants, and to determine the best period to collect Ormosia arborea seeds. The seeds were harvested from mother plants in two different periods (June and August/2011). The seeds were then subjected to biometrical analyses, determination of moisture content and germination tests. Determination of the soaking curve and evaluation of the dormancy breaking methods were performed using the seeds collected in the second period. The soaking curve confirmed the tegumentary dormancy, and the chemical scarification for 15 minutes was the more adequate procedure to overcome this dormancy. The biometry revealed average values higher than those on literature, and there was difference between both harvesting periods. The mass correlates with the other evaluated parameters, and can be indicated for selecting seeds for seedling production. The two harvesting periods of Ormosia arborea seeds were considered appropriated for seed supplying, due to the high germination potential. Nevertheless, the best period for harvesting is when fruits are already opened, mature, and with low moisture content (no additional drying time needed), what hinders the occurrence of fungi.
-Germination is a biological process that depends on adequate water supply to embryo development. Water deficit slows this process and depending on intensity and extent of this deficit may cause seed death. Nevertheless, it has not yet been reported whether seed size influences physiological potential, or tolerance to water stress. This study aimed at assessing the effects of seed size, as well as of water stress on germination of the seeds and on early soybean seedling development. The experiment was composed by seeds of 10 soybean cultivars classified by metallic screens with three sizes of oval holes (S12, S13 and S14) and subjected to three water potentials (0, -0.1, and -0.2 MPa), with four replications. Data on genotypes were grouped as replications and arranged on a factorial 3 x 3 (size x water potential), with 40 replications. Data assessed were: first and final count of germination; length and seedling dry weight; and correlation between length/mass of radicle and hypocotyl. It was concluded that under ideal moisture conditions larger seeds have better physiological quality, producing more vigorous seedlings; but, that under water potential of -0.2 MPa smaller seeds produce larger seedlings; and that the hypocotyl is more influenced by water stress than the radicle.Index terms: Glycine max, seed, water potential, germination.
