The adsorption of several atomic (H, O, N, S, and C) and molecular (N 2 , HCN, CO, NO, and NH 3 ) species and molecular fragments (CN, CNH 2 , NH 2, NH, CH 3 , CH 2 , CH, HNO, NOH, and OH) on the (1 1 1) facet of platinum, an important industrial and fuel cell catalyst, was studied using self-consistent periodic density functional theory (DFT-GGA) calculations at a coverage of 1/4 ML. The best binding site, energy, and position, as well as an estimated diffusion barrier, of each species were determined. The binding strength for all the species can be ordered as follows: N 2 < NH 3 < HCN < NO < CO < CH 3 < OH < NH 2 < H < CN < NH < O < HNO < CH 2 < NOH < CNH 2 < N < S < CH < C. Although the atomic species generally preferred fcc sites, there was no clear trend in site preference by the molecular species or molecular fragments. The vibrational frequencies of all the stable adsorbates in their best and second best adsorption sites were calculated and found to be in good agreement with experimental values reported in the literature. Finally, the decomposition thermochemistry of NOH, HNO, NO, NH 3 , N 2 , CO, and CH 3 was analyzed.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) possess characteristics, such as tunable pore size and chemical functionality, that make them attractive candidates for separations, catalysis, gas storage, and sensing applications. The rate of diffusion of guest molecules in the pores is an important property for all of these potential applications. In this work, the self-diffusion of hydrocarbons in IRMOF-1 was studied as a function of chain length with a combination of molecular dynamics simulations and pulsed field gradient NMR experiments. Excellent agreement is seen between the experiments and simulations, and the self-diffusion coefficients in IRMOF-1 are on the same order as those in the bulk liquid. Additionally, the effect of concentration on diffusivity was found to be very small for low to moderate loadings. Molecular dynamics simulations also provided insights about the preferential diffusion pathways of these guests in IRMOF-1.

The accelerated growth rate of repository entries in crystallographic databases makes it arduous to identify and classify their prototype structures. The open-source AFLOW-XtalFinder package was developed to solve this problem. It symbolically maps structures into standard designations following the AFLOW Prototype Encyclopedia and calculates the internal degrees of freedom consistent with the International Tables for Crystallography. To ensure uniqueness, structures are analyzed and compared via symmetry, local atomic geometries, and crystal mapping techniques, simultaneously grouping them by similarity. The software (i) distinguishes distinct crystal prototypes and atom decorations, (ii) determines equivalent spin configurations, (iii) reveals compounds with similar properties, and (iv) guides the discovery of unexplored materials. The operations are accessible through a Python module ready for workflows, and through command line syntax. All the 4+ million compounds in the AFLOW.org repositories are mapped to their ideal prototype, allowing users to search database entries via symbolic structure-type. Furthermore, 15,000 unique structures — sorted by prevalence — are extracted from the AFLOW-ICSD catalog to serve as future prototypes in the Encyclopedia.
