'Leise, leise' has an almost Schubertian freshness. Francois Olivier's Christmas cycle written in French, with English and German translations, is set for soprano, female chorus and ten instruments. Michel Perret is responsible for the piano reduction. The wellbalanced choral writing plays an important part both on its own and as a background to the soaring solo voice. The cycle, an interesting addition to Christmas music, is timed for twenty minutes. Oxford University Press Two poems by Fredegond Shove by Vaughan Williams (4s.). Fair Sally by Maurice Greene, arr. Roger Fiske (2s. 6d.). Six Songs by Franz Xavier Mozart (2s. 6d.). Romanze by Schubert, arr. Fritz Spiegl (3s. 6d.).The Vaughan Williams songs were originally published in 1925 with two others, the well-known 'The Water Mill' and ' The New Ghost'. The atmosphere of ' Motion and Stillness' lies in its simple vocal line and droning accompaniment of bare fifths and triads. ' Four Nights' is longer, with quite remarkable verbal accentuation. Roger Fiske has skilfully realized Maurice Greene's spirited melody, and the accompaniment enlarges the nautical air. Franz Xavier Mozart, the younger of the composer's two surviving children, lived from 1791-1844. John Beckett's editorial notes are very interesting, but the songs are slight. ' Romanze' is a delightful cavatina for medium voice taken from Schubert's one-act opera Die Verschworenen. Fritz Spiegl has adapted it for performance with piano and B flat clarinet. Joseph Williams June Magic by Marguerita Spencer (2s. 6d.). Two Nursery Rhymes by Adrian Cruft (3s.). Oh, fair enough are sky and plain by E. J. Moeran (2s. 6d.). Parson and Clerk, arr. E. J.
