Значительную роль в этом сыграла книга журналиста Генри Джеймса Формана, с искажениями пересказавшего полученные выводы. Последовала жесткая критика, и исследования Фонда Пейна были скомпрометированы в американском научном сообществе. Последней значительной статьей, опубликованной участником проекта Полом Кресси, стала более сложная и теоретически выверенная интерпретация полученных результатов, но она осталась без должного внимания со стороны научного сообщества.
