REVISÃO DE LITERATURARESUMO | Contexto: Burnout é uma palavra inglesa utilizada para se referir a algo que deixou de funcionar por exaustão. É um problema que atinge profissionais de serviço, principalmente os cuidadores, em que a oferta do cuidado ou serviço frequentemente ocorre em situações de mudanças emocionais. A Síndrome de Burnout (SB) assume uma concepção multidimensional, cuja manifestação se caracteriza por esgotamento emocional, redução da realização pessoal no trabalho e despersonalização do profissional. Objetivo: Levantar informações sobre os principais fatores de risco que favorecem o aparecimento da SB e suas consequências para o indivíduo, a organização e a sociedade. Métodos: Baseia-se em uma revisão bibliográfica utilizando as bases de dados LILACS, SciELO, BIREME e Medline, no período de 2002 a 2014. Resultados: São diversos os sintomas da SB, que interferem em todas as esferas da vida do indivíduo. Conclusão: A síndrome necessita ser reconhecida como doença, para que possam ser implementadas medidas para sua prevenção. ABSTRACT | Context:Burnout is an English word that refers to something or someone that has crashed from exhaustion. It is a problem that affects service professionals, particularly caregiving health care professionals, in which the provision of care or service occurs in emotionally charged situations. Burnout Syndrome takes a multidimensional concept, symptomized by emotional exhaustion, reduced personal accomplishment, and professional detachment. Objective: To gather information on the key risk factors that favors development of the syndrome and the consequences for the individual, the organization, and society. Methods: It is based on a review of relevant literature, using the LILACS, SciELO, BIREME and Medline databases covering the period 2002-2014. Results: There are several symptoms of the syndrome and they interfere in all functioning areas of the individual's life. Conclusion: Burnout Syndrome needs to be recognized as a disease, so it will be possible to implement preventive measures.
