Introduction:The act of indicating one or more drugs to be taken by the patient, its dosage, and the interval of the treatment is known as prescribing. It is a dynamic and individualized clinical process. Cultural, social, economic and promotional factors can influence the pattern of prescription. Thus the present study was conducted to evaluate the drug prescription knowledge in third year and final year dental students at Teerthanker Mahaveer Dental College and Research Centre, Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, India.Methodology:A questionnaire consisting of 10 open-ended questions was used in a study which was conducted among 170 male and female, third year and final year dental students of Teerthanker Mahaveer Dental College and Research Centre. Tables and graphs were used to represent data.Results:Pain was found to be the most important reason for prescribing medication. Diclofenac was found to be the most commonly prescribed NSAID. While amoxicillin was found to be the most widely prescribed antibiotic. Lack of knowledge about drug posology was the basic reason for error done by students. Maximum number of students gets their information for prescribing drugs from their professors. Maximum number of students was unacquainted about the WHO Guide to Good Prescribing.Conclusion:The knowledge of prescribing drugs is of utmost need for good dental practice and hence, it is essential to expand the knowledge related to pharmacological therapy and to know about the proper therapeutic guidelines. With the help of WHO Guide to Good Prescribing, and some educational programs students will develop better prescribing skills.
Background: The etiology of mandibular third molar impaction is proposed to be mainly due to inadequate space between the distal of the second mandibular molar and the anterior border of the ramus of the mandible. This study was aimed to assess whether an association exists between different facial types and mandibular length to impaction of mandibular third molars. Materials and Methods: The study consisted of 170 patients who were assessed for facial type clinically based on facial index and mandibular length radiographically on lateral cephalogram. The impaction status was determined clinically and radiographically on orthopantomogram. The facial type was categorized as euryprosopic (broad face), mesoprosopic (normal facial type), leptoprosopic (long face), hypereuryprosopic (extra broad face), and hyperleptoprosopic (extra long face). Results: Of 170 patients, 18.8% of cases were with hypereuryprosopic profile, 33.5% of cases with euryprosopic profile, 24.7% with mesoprosopic profile, 21.8% with leptoprosopic, and 1.2% with hyperleptoprosopic profile were found. Nearly 42.2% of cases with hypereuryprosopic profile, 52.6% of cases with euryprosopic profile, 53.6% cases of mesoprosopic profile, and 60.3% cases of hyperleptoprosopic and leptoprosopic profile had impacted mandibular third molars. As for mandibular length assessment, 66% cases of short mandibular length, 64.5% cases of normal mandibular length, and 27.9% cases of long mandibular length had impaction. Conclusion: Within the limitations of the study, it was concluded that, though a higher incidence of impacted third molar was noted in patients with long facial pattern, no significant difference could be established among facial types and their association with impacted mandibular third molars. A significant association was noted between mandibular length and impaction.
Sphaeranthus indicus Linn. is commonly used in Indian traditional medicine for management of multiple pathological conditions. However, there are limited studies on anticancer activity of this plant and its underlying molecular mechanisms. Here, we isolated an active constituent, 7-hydroxyfrullanolide (7-HF), from the flowers of this plant, which showed promising chemotherapeutic potential. The compound was more effective in inhibiting in vitro proliferation of colon cancers cells through G2/M phase arrest than other cancer cell lines that were used in this study. Consistent with in vitro data, 7-HF caused substantial regression of tumour volume in a syngeneic mouse model of colon cancer. The molecule triggered extrinsic apoptotic pathway, which was evident as upregulation of DR4 and DR5 expression as well as induction of their downstream effector molecules (FADD, Caspase-8). Concurrent activation of intrinsic pathway was demonstrated with loss of ΔΨm to release pro-apoptotic cytochrome c from mitochondria and activation of downstream caspase cascades (Caspase -9, -3). Loss of p53 resulted in decreased sensitivity of cells towards pro-apoptotic effect of 7-HF with increased number of viable cells indicating p53-dependent arrest of cancer cell growth. This notion was further supported with 7-HF-mediated elevation of endogenous p53 level, decreased expression of MDM2 and transcriptional upregulation of p53 target genes in apoptotic pathway. However, 7-HF was equally effective in preventing progression of HCT116 p53+/+ and p53−/− cell derived xenografts in nude mice, which suggests that differences in p53 status may not influence its in vivo efficacy. Taken together, our results support 7-HF as a potential chemotherapeutic agent and provided a new mechanistic insight into its anticancer activity.
Melanoma which is most commonly spread skin cancer in United States, UK and Australia and it has been estimated that about 12,650 people died from this cancer in the year 2013 in UK. Thus, early detection and diagnosis of the tumor is most important. And according to survey it was found that 60% of claim lodged against Medical Protection Society for incorrect diagnosis by doctors or negligence of medical reports due to system failure. So, accurate diagnosis is required for effective treatment of melanoma. This paper presents various diagnostic techniques such as Menzies scale method, Seven Point checklist, Asymmetry, Border, Color, Diameter (ABCD)rule based method and Pattern Analysis method for early diagnosis of cancer. The methodology which is been followed in diagnosis of skin cancer is also presented and a comparative study of various edge detection, an image preprocessing and segmentation technique are proposed. In our study, analysis has been done on number of samples melanoma clinical images and it has been observed that Canny edge detection and preprocessing using Otsu method is the best approach. Due to importance of image segmentation a number of algorithm have been proposed and based on image that is inputted in the algorithm should be chosen to give the best results.
