Advances in technology and changes in educational strategies have resulted in the integration of technology in the classroom. Multimedia instructional tools (MMIT) provide student-centered active-learning instructional activities. MMITs are common in introductory computer applications courses based on the premise that MMITs should increase student learning. This study examined the use of MMIT in an introductory computer applications course to determine if a significant relationship existed between the level of use of the MMIT and student learning. Subjects included students enrolled in an online introductory computer applications course at one southeastern university. The researchers used descriptive statistics to demonstrate students' use of the MMIT and used pre and post-course test scores to determine changes in learning. This study revealed no significant impact on student learning based on level of use of the MMIT grader assignments or training activities. A significant difference was found for the level of use of MMIT quizzes.
To assess, evaluate, and revise a technology plan, the first task is to collect data that is an integral component of a technology plan. How the data is collected, the types of data needed, and who should be consulted during the data collection process are all very important questions that must be addressed when creating a technology plan. The interpretation of valid and reliable data is the basis for the successful integration of technology into the educational institution. This chapter provides information concerning methodologies to be used during the data collection process for technology planning. Additionally, the chapter addresses both formative and summative assessments, as well as the kinds of evaluations associated with technology plans. The chapter includes tables and exemplars of technology milestones and survey tools, which are important factors in the development of a technology plan.

The incorporation of technology into the classroom is intended to have a positive impact on teaching and learning. Technology planning is a necessary component of this process to make certain all technology benefits are realized. Technology cannot be an add-on component in education; it needs to be fully incorporated into the entire educational process. This requires the development and implementation of a comprehensive technology plan. This plan is created by a technology planning committee and supports all related vision and mission statements, including those for the school, district, and municipality. A needs assessment will be used to determine the current state of the technology and infrastructure. Budgetary considerations, including total cost of ownership, are evaluated to help verify feasibility of the plan. A technology plan is a working document that is evaluated and updated on a continual basis. The development, implementation, and revision of the technology plan help ensure the effective implementation of technology in the educational institution.
