Os conceitos básicos de etiologia, genética e características clínicas da síndrome de Down são usados nesta revisão como base para apresentar pesquisas sobre doença periodontal em pacientes com síndrome de Down, uma vez que praticamente 100% dos pacientes com síndrome de Down desenvolvem doença periodontal na idade adulta. Acredita-se que, juntamente com fatores ambientais e culturais relacionados à higiene e à má coordenação motora, as características orais de indivíduos com síndrome de Down possam estar alteradas. Além disso, o padrão de destruição periodontal observado em indivíduos com síndrome de Down é consistente com o da periodontite agressiva. Objetiva-se neste trabalho realizar um levantamento bibliográfico sobre a temática, onde foram buscados os trabalhos nas bases de dados como: MedLine, BBO, Google Acadêmico, Scielo, entre outros. Pode-se notar uma ligação entre o desenvolvimento de técnicas de atendimento clínico e a evolução do conhecimento sobre a síndrome de Down. Além disso, nesta revisão também são apresentadas perspectivas para uma melhor compreensão da síndrome de Down no contexto clínico relacionado à saúde periodontal no futuro, o que será refletido em tratamentos clínicos mais individualizados e eficientes, que proporcionarão melhor qualidade de vida para esses pacientes
