Context. The baryonic Tully-Fisher relation (BTF) is a fundamental relation between baryonic mass and maximum rotation velocity. It can be used to estimate distances, as well as to constrain the properties of dark matter and its relation with the visible matter. Aims. In this paper, we explore if extremely low-mass dwarf galaxies follow the same BTF relation as high-mass galaxies. We quantify the scatter in the BTF relation and use this to constrain the allowed elongations of dark matter halo potentials. Methods.We obtained H i synthesis data of 11 dwarf galaxies and derive several independent estimates for the maximum rotation velocity. Results. Constructing a BTF relation using data from the literature for the high-mass end, and galaxies with detected rotation from our sample for the low-mass end results in a BTF with a scatter of 0.33 mag. Conclusions. This scatter constrains the ellipticities of the potentials in the plane of the disks of the galaxies to an upper limit of 0−0.06, indicating that dwarf galaxies are at most only mildly tri-axial. Our results indicate that the BTF relation is a fundamental relation which all rotationally dominated galaxies seem to follow.

Abstract. We present fully sampled high angular resolution two-dimensional kinematics in the Hα spectral line, optical and near-infrared imaging, as well as 21 cm atomic hydrogen data of the spiral galaxy NGC 278. This is a small non-barred galaxy, which has a bright star forming inner region of about 2 kpc in diameter, reminiscent of nuclear rings seen mainly in barred galaxies. The Hα kinematics show a disturbed velocity field, which may be partly the result of spiral density wave streaming motions. The 21 cm data trace the atomic hydrogen well outside the optical disk. The H  is not abundant but clearly shows disturbed morphology and kinematics. We postulate that the current structure of NGC 278 is a result of a recent interaction with a small gas-rich galaxy, which is now dispersed into the outer disk of NGC 278. Non-axisymmetries set up in the disk by this minor merger may well be the cause of the intense star formation in the inner region, which can be interpreted as a rare example of a nuclear ring in a non-barred galaxy. Rather than being induced by a bar, this nuclear ring would then be the direct result of an interaction event in the recent history of the galaxy.

Magnetic fields play an important role in shaping the structure and evolution of the interstellar medium (ISM) of galaxies, but the details of this relationship remain unclear. With SKA1, the 3D structure of galactic magnetic fields and its connection to star formation will be revealed. A highly sensitive probe of the internal structure of the magnetoionized ISM is the partial depolarization of synchrotron radiation from inside the volume. Different configurations of magnetic field and ionized gas within the resolution element of the telescope lead to frequency-dependent changes in the observed degree of polarization. The results of spectro-polarimetric observations are tied to physical structure in the ISM through comparison with detailed modeling, supplemented with the use of new analysis techniques that are being actively developed and studied within the community such as Rotation Measure Synthesis. The SKA will enable this field to come into its own and begin the study of the detailed structure of the magnetized ISM in a sample of nearby galaxies, thanks to its extraordinary wideband capabilities coupled with the combination of excellent surface brightness sensitivity and angular resolution.Advancing Astrophysics with the Square Kilometre Array
