Objective: To analyze the correlation of screening mammography coverage and the breast cancer mortality rate in Northeastern Brazil. Methods: Observational, analytical and cross-sectional study, carried out using secondary data. Variables studied: geographic distribution of mammography equipments, screening coverage, ratio of screening mammograms on the target population and the neoplasia mortality rate. Statistical analysis was performed using a correlation test and simple linear regression. Results: There was a poor distribution of mammography equipments and less screening coverage than recommended. There is a positive correlation between the annual ratio of examinations on the target population and the mortality rate. Conclusion: The region has an incipient screening program, with a number of tests that does not favor an impact in the mortality rate reducing, in addition to not being sufficiently applied as a preventive method, but in more advanced stages of the disease, without interference as a preventive factor of lethality.
