Dentre os vários insumos químicos existentes, a cal destaca-se por sua ampla aplicabilidade nos mais diversos setores industriais. É obtida principalmente pela calcinação de calcários, processo no qual o carbonato de cálcio (CaCO3) decompõe-se em óxido de cálcio (CaO) em temperaturas de 800-900°C. Uma maneira sustentável de se produzir a cal é empregando resíduos com alto percentual do carbonato de cálcio, como as cascas de ovos ou conchas marinhas. Após a reação de calcinação, o cálcio presente em uma amostra pode ser quantificado por diversos métodos, como a termogravimetria, a difração de raios-X, a espectroscopia atômica e a volumetria ácido-base, a qual se destaca por ser uma técnica simples e com custos baixos de execução. Dessa maneira, esse trabalho propôs um procedimento analítico para determinação dos teores de CaCO3 e CaO em uma amostra de casca de ovo após calcinação por titulação ácido-base, utilizando-se como reagentes o ácido clorídrico (HCl) e o hidróxido de sódio (NaOH). Além disso, foi possível propor equações matemáticas que possibilitariam a estimação dos teores de óxido de cálcio ou carbonato de cálcio a partir do conhecimento da massa inicial da amostra, molaridades e volumes gastos de solução ao longo do procedimento.
Em 2014, foram produzidos em todo o mundo 70 milhões de toneladas de ovos, o que corresponde a aproximadamente 8 milhões de resíduos provenientes da casca. Para minimizar os efeitos da poluição causada por esse resíduo, têm sido propostas alternativas para o uso das cascas de ovos em diversas áreas. A casca de ovo é composta por 94% m/m de carbonato de cálcio (CaCO3) um insumo que possui diversas aplicações, entre elas a produção de cal, formado em sua maioria por óxido de cálcio (CaO). Dessa maneira, objetivou-se neste trabalho agregar valor aos resíduos de cascas de ovos produzidos em uma padaria de pequeno porte em Uberlândia/MG por meio da possibilidade de calcinação do CaCO3 para produção de cal. Foram avaliados o consumo mensal da padaria com ovos, o rendimento da reação química de calcinação e os gastos com energia de forma a encontrar o retorno financeiro que a padaria teria com a venda da cal produzida. No melhor cenário, considerando uma conversão de 90% de CaCO3 em CaO, o retorno financeiro do microempreendedor seria de 24% com relação ao seu investimento na compra dos ovos. Além disso, seria evitado um descarte mensal de 25,7 kg de resíduos, o que minimizaria os impactos ambientais gerados pelo descarte das cascas de ovos.
