La presente investigación, por un lado, analiza las razones y el papel de los indígenas de Huamanga en el proceso de la Independencia. Por otro lado, el significado del establecimiento de la administración republicana para los indígenas. Mediante la revisión de una vasta documentación consideramos que las razones del rechazo al virreinato fue la implantación de las reformas borbónicas y las contribuciones de guerra en un contexto de pobreza, lluvias, sequías y enfermedades. Los indígenas participaron en los campos de batalla, conformaron milicias, abastecieron la guerra y difundieron las informaciones. Sin embargo, en el gobierno republicano, quedaron relegados: perdieron su diversidad identitaria, sufrieron la prohibición de las festividades, las modificaciones territoriales y los litigios prolongados.
El presente artículo estudia los sectores sociales que conformaron el bando realista en Huamanga, sus actividades económicas, razones de su identificación con la administración borbónica y las consecuencias económicas que sufrieron en la Independencia. Mediante la revisión de documentos regionales, nacionales e internacionales proponemos que el bando realista en Huamanga estaba conformado por españoles, mestizos e indígenas de diferentes condiciones económicas y responsabilidades administrativas. Dichos sectores sociales se identificaron y defendieron la bandera realista por conservar sus beneficios económicos, políticos y privilegios que les brindaba la administración virreinal.
Este artículo estudia el papel de las mujeres de Huamanga en la guerra por la independencia peruana. A través de documentos de archivos regionales y nacionales damos un sustento formal a la idea de que las mujeres contribuyeron significativamente cuando apoyaron a las fuerzas libertarias y realistas. Esta participación activa se traduce en sus aportes económicos y dirección de las actividades productivas con los cuales sustentaron la guerra; así también, permitieron la participación de sus familiares en las contiendas bélicas y difundieron los mensajes entre los actores de la contienda hasta el momento culminante del triunfo de Simón Bolívar en la batalla de Ayacucho (1824).
