Wheat stem sawfly (WSS), Cephus cinctus N., is a major insect pest of winter and spring wheat, Triticum aestivum L., in areas of the northern Great Plains. The primary control measure is use of resistant cultivars containing solid stems. Environmental effects on expression of the trait can be problematic, thus genetic markers would be useful. In this study, a doubled haploid (DH) winter wheat population derived from a ‘Rampart’ (solid stems) × ‘Jerry’ (hollow stems) cross was analyzed to identify molecular markers linked to genes controlling stem solidness. The DH population was genotyped with GWM and BARC microsatellite primers that spanned the wheat genome. To genotype the population efficiently, bulked segregant analysis (BSA) was used to identify polymorphism between groups of solid stem and hollow stem individuals. Four microsatellite markers (GWM247, GWM340, GWM547, and BARC77) were found linked to a single solid stem QTL (designate Qss.msub‐3BL) on chromosome 3BL. However GWM247, GWM340, and GWM547 were found to be more closely linked to the QTL than BARC77. Single marker analysis showed Qss.msub‐3BL contributes at least 76% of the total variation for stem solidness. Additionally, no significant relationship existed between Qss.msub‐3BL and other agronomic traits, including yield. These microsatellite markers (GWM247, GWM340, and GWM547) will be useful for selecting solid‐stemmed wheat cultivars to help control the wheat stem sawfly.

Row spacing, plant density, and N application timing can be manipulated to optimize plant growth and spatial distribution, therefore maximizing sunlight, nutrients, soil water use effi ciency and grain yield. A 2-yr fi eld study to evaluate the eff ects of four seeding rates (108, 215, 323, and 430 seeds m -2 ), two row spacings (15 and 30 cm), and three N treatments (FA1, 100% at seeding; FA2, 50% at seeding and 50% at tiller formation; and FA3, 50% at seeding and 50% at shoot elongation) on grain yield of McNeal hard red spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was conducted in central Montana. Spring wheat accumulated greater biomass at a faster rate under the 15-cm row spacing than the 30-cm row spacing. Grain yield was 410 and 412 kg ha -1 greater at 15-cm than at 30-cm row spacings in 2004 and 2005, and the yield increase was primarily attributed to 44 and 40 more spikes m -2 at 15-cm than at 30-cm row spacing in 2004 and 2005, respectively. Grain yield was not signifi cantly aff ected by the N treatments, thus all N should be applied at seeding. Th e optimum seeding rate was 215 seeds m -2 . Tillers at higher seeding rates had larger phyllochrons and greater mortalities. Low protein content was found in FA3 and high seeding rate treatments in 2005. Narrow row spacing is recommended for high spring wheat yield in the northern Great Plains. Th is yield increase cannot be achieved by increasing seeding rate at wide row spacing.
Increasing temperatures are a threat to hard red spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) production in the northern Great Plains and may impact objectives for breeding programs. Weather data and agronomic performance of experimental lines and a check cultivar ‘Thatcher’ were compiled for six sites in Montana for 1950 to 2007. Mean annual temperature increased significantly at five sites. March temperature increased significantly at all sites, and planting date has become significantly earlier at a rate of 0.24 d yr−1. Grain yield of Thatcher increased significantly at a rate of 23.5 kg ha−1 yr−1. July temperatures increased significantly at two sites. July temperatures showed a significant negative correlation with grain yield at three sites and with grain volume weight at three sites. Nursery means over years as adjusted for Thatcher was used as a measure of genetic change and showed significantly increased grain yield and significantly earlier heading date. Our results suggest that earlier planting due to warmer spring temperatures has helped to alleviate negative effects of high temperatures during grain filling periods. Genetic changes in breeding materials have also contributed to increased yield potential, partially due to earlier heading and avoidance of July heat. Projection of increasing temperatures suggests the need for management and breeding strategies to insure productivity of hard red spring wheat in the northern Great Plains.
Winter pea (Pisum sativum L.) and lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.) have potential agronomic advantages over spring types in the Pacific Northwest (PNW) and northern Great Plains (NGP). The objectives of this study were to: (i) determine suitable seeding date and cereal stubble height in no‐till systems for winter pea and lentil; (ii) quantify and compare biomass and seed yield of winter pea and lentil with spring types; and (iii) compare adaptation of winter pea and lentil between the PNW and the NGP. Two breeding lines each of winter pea (PS9430706 and PS9530726) and winter lentil [LC9979010 (‘Morton’) and LC9976079] and two commercial cultivars each of spring pea (CDC Mozart and Delta) and spring lentil (Brewer and CDC Richlea) were sown on different dates (early and late fall dates for winter lines and spring date only for spring cultivars) and into different stubble heights (0.1 and 0.3 m) and compared for yield and agronomic adaptation in no‐till systems at four locations: Moccasin and Amsterdam, MT; Genesee, ID; and Rosalia, WA. Stubble height did not influence winter or spring pea biomass production or seed yield. Tall stubble increased lentil biomass by 220 to 530 kg ha−1 and seed yield by 100 to 260 kg ha−1 in five out of nine site–years. Fall‐seeded winter pea lines produced as much as 1830 kg ha−1 more seed yield than spring cultivars at the PNW sites, but not at the NGP sites. Early fall‐seeded lentil yielded as much as 480 and 590 kg ha−1 greater than spring types in the NGP and PNW, respectively. Delayed fall seeding and reduced stubble height decreased yields more frequently in the NGP than in the PNW.

Superior bread‐making quality is a primary objective for most hard red wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) breeding programs. Milled white flour is traditionally used to measure quality. There is increasing demand in the domestic market for whole grain bread products. The objective of this research was to determine the relationship of bread quality parameters based on white flour versus whole wheat flour in a set of hard red spring and hard red winter wheat genotypes. Quality evaluations were conducted on sets of genotypes grown in four environments for both wheat classes. Correlations of genotype performance for white flour versus whole meal varied with the traits. Protein levels were highly correlated, but correlations tended to decrease as dough was processed into a final product. This was especially true for hard red spring wheat genotypes. Mixograph tolerance of white flour versus whole meal was correlated highly for both spring and winter wheat, while water absorption was correlated poorly for both classes of wheat. Correlations for final loaf volume of whole wheat versus white flour was significant in two environments, and ranged from 0.08 to 0.72 for spring wheat genotypes. Correlations for loaf volume were significant in all environments, and ranged from 0.76 to 0.92 for winter wheat genotypes. In general, our data indicated that quality measured on white flour could be used as an estimate of whole wheat performance, but that identification of the best genotypes for whole wheat performance may require separate quality analysis.
