Hasta el momento no se ha valorado en su justa medida la labor desempeñada por el alto clero en los antecedentes constructivos de la catedral de Sevilla, iniciada en el siglo XV. Si bien la historiografía sí se ha detenido en analizar el papel como promotor del Cabildo Catedral hispalense, lo cierto es que esta fortuna crítica de la institución capitular ha oscurecido el decisivo protagonismo y liderazgo que desplegaron algunos arzobispos durante la construcción de la catedral más grande de Europa. En este trabajo analizamos las implicaciones en materia artística de los arzobispos que gobernaron la sede entre los años 1369 y 1432, centrándonos en Pedro Barroso, Gonzalo de Mena, Alonso de Ejea, Diego de Anaya y fray Lope de Olmedo.
Profundizar en la biografía del prelado hispano Alonso de Ejea (h. 1360-1417) implica acercarse a una de las figuras eclesiásticas más influyentes de la Europa de principios del siglo XV. Sus cargos como embajador del rey Enrique III de Castilla y mano derecha del papa Benedicto XIII avalan su importancia en la escena sociopolítica del Gran Cisma de Occidente. Hasta el momento no ha recibido ningún estudio desde la Historia del Arte medieval o Estudios Culturales centrado en su episcopado hispalense (1403-1417). El objeto de este trabajo es realizar una aproximación a su faceta como promotor artístico y analizar las causas que impidieron monumentalizar su memoria en la catedral de Sevilla de manera acorde a la relevancia que alcanzó en vida.
