THREE FIGURESThe present paper describes a case of right aorta and offers a review of one hundred additional cases from the literature, in an attempt to discover any significant statistical data, concerning frequency, sex ratios, age, and associated abnormalities.
DESCRIPTION O F NEW CASEThe case here reported is that of a white male fifty to sixty years old. The cadaver had been used for a student dissection and had been almost completely dissected before the present description was undertaken. The specimen consists of the trunk, arms, and thighs, all thoroughly dissected. The anterior body wall, together with most of the viscera, has been removed. Enough remains, however, to establish the following points:The heart is normal, but crowded somewhat to the left. The great veins and pulmonary artery are normal in position. The aorta arises normally, but arches to the right and backward over the right bronchus and continues caudally slightly to the right of the midline. The branches of the arch appear in reverse order: left innominate, right carotid, right subclavian. The ligamentum arteriosum is about 1 em. long, arising from the right pulmonary artery about 4 mm. from the pulmonary bifurcation and joining the aorta about 6 mm. distal to the apex of the arch. The junctions with the ligamentum are marked inside the pulmonary artery and aorta by small, wrinkled depressions.
