Avant de revêtir les habits de l'évidence, cette synonymie s'est construite dans l'interaction entre une production savante (celle des philologues indologues puis celle des sciences sociales) et un savoir administratif et statistique, celui du Raj britannique et de ses recensements. Introduite dans le champ de la sociologie, la notion de «système des castes» y est devenue une entité autonome, dont la légitimité académique ne pouvait être remise en question. Retracer aujourd'hui l'histoire sociale de cette notion, ce n'est pas seulement réinscrire l'anthropologie des indianistes dans un vieux fonds de commerce colonial: c'est surtout décrire la construction d'une formation discursive qui en se réifiant. se trouve à l'origine de bon nombres de pratiques sociales et politiques dans l'Inde contemporaine.
