In several of the works of Spanish writer Benito Pérez Galdós, love stories help create a vision of Spain as a country divided between religious conventionalism and scientific progress, between corrupting idleness and useful work as a pillar of the new ethics. Gender intervenes in Galdós's works in two interconnected ways: in the first place, it appears systematically to establish and examine the problematic relationship between different ideological currents in Spain via the metaphor of romantic relationship. Secondly, Galdós's works themselves become a space in which notions of gender are built, debated and redefined, in interaction with the discourses of nation and of civilisation. Thus, his works contributed to explore the ideal and the reproachable, the desirable and the understandable, the expected and the imaginable, with regards to masculinity and femininity in the late nineteenth century Spain.
