Стаття присвячена дослідженню питання функціонування інституту Президента в Україні, а також визначенню перспектив його удосконалення та розвитку на сучасному етапі державотворення. Означеному аналізу піддаються такі демократичні країни, як США, Польща, Німеччина, Франція та Україна, які є головними об'єктами дослідження. Встановлюється, що досягнення ефективного балансу стримувань та противаг між президентом, виконавчою та законодавчою гілками влади є одним із найважливіших чинників розвитку державної влади. Акцентується увага на тому, що інститут Президента з моменту запровадження перебуває в стані постійного удосконалення. The article is dedicated to studying the issue of functioning of the institution of the President in Ukraine, and to determining the prospects for its improvement and development at the present stage of the state formation. It carries out a comparative analysis of the president's status, functions and powers in the checks and balances system based on the principle of separation of powers. The democratic countries such as the USA, Poland, Germany, France and Ukraine, which are the main objects of research, are subjected to the said analysis. It is established that the achievement of an effective balance of checks and balances mechanism between the President and the executive and the legislative branches of power is one of the most important factors for the development of state power and its institutional, functional and system structural elements, for establishing accord in the society, for promoting recognition and creation of the positive image of Ukraine in the international arena. It is noted that although the institution of the president is traditional for most countries of the world, its role and powers in the system of public authorities under the laws of different countries are largely different. The President, as the head of state, can have both broad powers in shaping the political course of the state and hold a nominal position under the conditions of a particular political regime.
