Introdução: O processo de envelhecimento populacional em curso no Brasil vem aumentado a frequência de doenças psiquiátricas na terceira idade, dentre as quais a depressão é a desordem mais comum. Em pacientes idosos, além dos sintomas típicos, ela costuma ser acompanhada por sintomatologia atípica, o que pode dificultar sua identificação na prática clinica. Objetivos: Objetivou-se neste artigo, levantar a frequência de suspeita de depressão em idosos atendidos em um Ambulatório de Gerontologia de Belo Horizonte, no ano de 2008. Método: A amostra foi composta por 22 idosos de um total de 62 idosos atendidos no ambulatório. Para o levantamento dos casos, utilizou-se a pontuação obtida na Escala de Depressão Geriátrica (GDS) contida na primeira avaliação aplicada nos idosos incluídos no estudo. Resultados: Observou-se que 27,27% (n=6) dos idosos apresentaram suspeita de depressão, de acordo com a GDS. Entre os idosos com suspeita de depressão, 66,66% possuíam idade entre 60 a 70 anos; 66,66% tinham primeiro grau incompleto, 50% eram viúvos, e 83,33%, mulheres, destas, (n=5) 60% eram viúvas. Verificou-se que a frequência de suspeita de depressão entre os idosos foi 27,27%, sendo esse achado similar a outros estudos. Conclusão: Tal fato remete sobre a importância do planejamento de um programa fisioterápico e de uma avaliação criteriosa desses pacientes em busca de suspeita de depressão.
