El término "roca ornamental" se define comúnmente como una piedra natural, que al ser seleccionada y sometida a un proceso industrial es desbastada o cortada en determinada forma y tamaño con o sin una superficie labrada mecánicamente o pulimentada, para ser utilizada como material noble de construcción, elemento de ornamentación, arte funerario y escultórico variados, conservando íntegramente su composición, textura y características físico - químicas. Las propiedades físicas de las rocas ornamentales son de gran importancia, pues su apariencia, belleza y prestigio, en primer lugar, son determinantes en su comercialización.
En la etapa de localización y determinación del emplazamiento de una cantera, se estima la belleza de la piedra y se define la factibilidad de explotación, mediante la determinación de un conjunto de factores geológicos y económicos.
Es necesario conocer en las regiones de Tacna y Moquegua el potencial efectivo de recursos no metálicos susceptibles de ser explotados como rocas ornamentales y definir las mejores aplicaciones, para dar el más elevado valor agregado a su producción.
