Palavras ABSTRACT(Infl uence of edge distance and leaf density on the abundance of pioneer plants in a patch of tropical submontane forest in the Ecological Station of Wenceslau Guimarães (Bahia, Brazil)). Edge eff ects are changes in physical, chemical and biological parameters observed in the area of contact of the forest edge with the surrounding matrix. Light availability is the crucial trigger factor. Th e aim of this study was to assess the infl uence of light availability on abundance of pioneer plant species in a fragment of a tropical submontane forest, in the municipality of Wenceslau Guimarães, Bahia, Brazil. Th e results showed reduced abundance of pioneer species as edge distance increased. Th is can be explained by increased leaf density, and consequently reduction of light availability as of 30 meters from the edge in the various forest strata. Th is pattern explains the distribution of pioneer plants in fragmented landscapes, and is useful in the development of management strategies such as proper management of the landscape.
Spatial variation in the structure of macrobenthic assemblages on intertidal flats is known to be related to different environmental variables. Most of the studies have observed that along the estuarine gradient, salinity is the most important variable driving the patterns of the macrobenthic assemblages. However, the great majority of studies have been done on single estuarine systems in temperate regions. We investigated the relationship between the macrobenthic assemblages in intertidal habitats and the environmental variables along three tropical estuaries. From lower to upper estuarine regions we sampled benthic macrofauna, salinity and sediments. The structure of the benthic assemblages was primarily related to salinity. There was a decrease in the number of taxa from the upper to the lower estuarine regions, indicating important deviation from Remane's model of estuarine diversity. There were important similarities of taxa abundance along different estuarine salinity gradients which can be properly tested in other tropical and temperate regions. We advocate that in order to adopt general and robust management practices it is essential to identify broad patterns and general rules governing estuarine systems.
Benthos are organisms, animals or plants, that live in direct relationship with the bottom. Benthic organisms have great ecological and economic importance. Several marine and coastal ecosystems such as mangroves, coral reefs, salt marshes and estuaries have an important benthic component, supporting a great biological diversity and providing a lot of services (e.g. refuge, spawning sites, feeding sites, breeding sites and coastline protection). Chemical and physical variables can strongly influence benthic organisms because it controls a great part of the environmental conditions in which a species can live. Furthermore, changes in the composition and or on the abundance of benthic species may indicate human impacts. Here we present the main characteristics of important benthic habitats of the Todos os Santos Bay (TSB), contextualizes some results of the TSB Project and discuss impacts on mangroves and coral reefs on different spatial scales. Despite the impacts, many of the benthic habitats in the TSB are still in a good conservation status and fully developing important ecological, economic and social functions. It is strongly suggested that a precise survey to map all benthic habitats in the TSB must be done and also the maintenance and creation of long term ecological monitoring programs.
