Introdução: O biofilme dental é considerado o fator etiológico primário da Doença Periodontal (DP), resultando em uma inflamação que afeta todo o tecido de suporte, ocasionada por diversos microrganismos periodontopatogênicos. A raspagem e alisamento radicular é o principal tratamento não cirúrgico para remoção ou a desestabilização desse biofilme dental. Nesse contexto, surge a Terapia Fotodinâmica (TFD), uma modalidade de terapêutica não invasiva, onde um agente fotossensibilizador se liga à célula alvo, ativado por uma luz específica, promovendo a liberação de oxigênio singleto e radicais livres, acarretando a morte celular bacteriana. Objetivo: O objetivo deste trabalho é o de ressaltar, por meio de uma revisão de literatura, a eficácia da terapia fotodinâmica (TFD) como adjunta no tratamento periodontal. Métodos: Foi realizada pesquisa bibliográfica consultando as bases eletrônicas de dados Scientific Eletronic Library Online (SCIELO) e National Library of Medicine (PUBMED) e livros na área de periodontia, utilizando a estratégia de busca por meio dos descritores: “doença periodontal”, “terapia fotodinâmica” e “laser”. Os critérios de inclusão foram: artigos online completos e gratuitos publicados entre os anos de 2001 e 2019; publicações em língua inglesa, portuguesa ou espanhola. Resultados: Os estudos mostraram resultados animadores, apresentando melhoria nos parâmetros clínicos. Conclusão: O tratamento convencional periodontal é indispensável e a TFD pode auxiliar na potencialização dos resultados.Descritores: doença periodontal, terapia fotodinâmica e laser.
