E m tempos em que o obscurantismo rodeia a percepção sobre a prática do historiador, o livro Vendem-se impressos a preços cômodos na cidade do Maranhão, dos historiadores Marcelo Cheche Galves, Romário Sampaio Basílio e Lucas Gomes Carvalho Pinto, expõe as vísceras do métier, de forma a salientar o aspecto crucial da pesquisa e do trabalho em grupo, bem como a importância das agências que ainda financiam pesquisas no país. Resultado do projeto de pesquisa "Posse, comércio e circulação de impressos na cidade de São Luís", desenvolvida pelo Núcleo de Estudos do Maranhão Oitocentista (NEMO), da Universidade Estadual do Maranhão, sob orientação do professor Marcelo Cheche Galves, a obra tem como premissa o reconhecimento de uma efetiva circulação de impressos na capitania e, posteriormente, província do Maranhão, entre o final do século XVIII e o ano de 1834. O livro resgata a existência de um comércio ativo envolvendo impressos, pouco explorado até então. O objetivo da obra é relacionar os impressos que circulavam em São Luís com importantes transformações sociais e econômicas pelas quais passava a cidade.Ancorada em arquivos brasileiros e portugueses, a pesquisa recolheu, para identificar práticas comerciais e circulação ligadas aos im-1 Universidade Federal de São Paulo.
