ABSTRACTCaatinga, the predominant vegetation type of the semiarid region of northeastern Brazil, is composed by plants showing efficient mechanisms to keep them in the ecosystem. The herbaceous, bush and tree strata provide food for animals and several products for human use, and supply seedbank with propagules to assure plant recovery. The objective of this study was to compare seedbank density, composition and diversity of three sites with different vegetation physiognomies: craibeira plantation site (A1), degraded site (A2) and juremas + sabia plantation site (A3), located at the Nupeárido Experimental Station/Federal University of Campina Grande (UFCG), Patos, PB state, Brazil. Five litterfal + soil samples were collected in each site and taken to the Forest Nursery of UFCG Campus in Patos and kept under a 50% solar radiation reduction plastic
This study aimed to recognize the floristic composition, the life form and the distribution of species of climbing plants occurring on 2 rock outcrops in the state of Pernambuco. Monthly botanical collections were made from February to September 2015 at Pedra do Cruzeiro (08°09′02.9″ S, 035°45′22.3″ W), municipality of Bezerros and Pico do Papagaio (07°49′25.7″ S, 038°03′14.8″ W), municipality of Triunfo. Fertile specimens were collected following the standard methodology in taxonomy. A total of 58 species were identified from the 2 areas, all widely distributed in Brazil and belonging to 20 botanical families. Apocynaceae, Convolvulaceae, Bignoniaceae, Dioscoreaceae and Fabaceae comprise 60% of all species. The predominant life form was phanerophyte (62%). As for the growth form, 67% of the climbers are herbaceous vines. The adaptation of twining was observed in 69% of species. Six new records for the state of Pernambuco were also identified. The rock outcrops studied show high species richness in relation to the found for climbers in other rock outcrops in the Brazilian Northeast Region. Key wordsCaatinga; flora; Neotropics; plant diversity; seasonal dry forest; vines.
During taxonomic studies of extra-Amazonian species of Heisteria, a new record (Heisteria maytenoides) and new species (Heisteria longipedicellata) from the Atlantic Forest of Espírito Santo were identified. Morphological descriptions, illustrations, the geographic distribution, and conservation status are provided for these species; an identification key for species of Heisteria of the state is also presented. Heisteria longipedicellata is known only from the type locality and recognized mainly by the long pedicel of the fruits (ca. 67 mm long). It is morphologically similar to H. blanchetiana, however, it differs by the length of the pedicel in fruit, diameter of the accrescent calyx in fruit and drupe size. Heisteria maytenoides, until now registered only in the phytogeographic domain of the Amazon in Colombia and Venezuela, had its distribution confirmed to Brazil, in the phytogeographic domain of the Atlantic Forest, in the state of Espírito Santo; it is recognized mainly by its coriaceous leaves and globoid fruits. In this study the richness of Heisteria for the Espírito Santo state is updated to five species. Heisteria blanchetiana, previously registered only to the state of Bahia, had its distribution expanded to include Espírito Santo.
In this study, five species of Cathedra (Olacaceae s. l.) were recognized, four of them endemic to Brazil and one widely distributed, occurring in Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, and Venezuela. Cathedra rupestris, a new species described here, is endemic to campos rupestres (Cerrado) in the state of Bahia, and is differentiated from other species of the genus mainly by reticulate bark, length of pedicel in flower (1.5–2.2 mm), length of petals (3–3.5 mm), as well as by the proportion of the hypogynous disk in relation to the fruit, which inthis species is limited to the base of the drupe. Regarding informal conservation status, C. bahiensis, C. grandiflora, and C. rubricaulis are suggested as Endangered, while C. acuminata and C. rupestris as Least Concern and Critically Endangered, respectively. Here the genus is reviewed, nomenclatural (one synonymization and two typifications) and geographic distributional updates are provided, in addition to an identification key, descriptions, and illustrations. Emended descriptions are also provided for two species.
This study provides descriptions, identification key and illustrations of diagnostic characters, as well as comments on the distribution and habitat of species of Olacaceae and Schoepficeae occurring in the eastern portion of northeastern Brazil, this area includes the states of Alagoas, Ceará, Paraíba, Pernambuco and Rio Grande do Norte. The morphological descriptions are based on samples collected during field expeditions (2017-2019) and analysis of herbarium specimens. Were recorded five species in four genera belonging to the family Olacaceae (Cathedra rubricaulis, Dulacia gardneriana, Heisteria ovata, H. perianthomega and Ximenia americana) and one of Schoepfiaceae (Schoepfia brasiliensis), these species occur mainly in Atlantic Forest domain (Lowland and Montane Forests) are also registered in Caatinga and Cerrado domains. The distribution of D. gardneriana and H. perianthomega was expanded, to the states of Rio Grande do Norte and Paraíba, respectively. The main vegetative characters useful for specific delimitation are presence/absence of armed branches, petiole dorso-ventrally flattened or cylindrical and nerves impressed or flat on the adaxial surface. The presence/absence of staminodes, of a pubescent ovary and hypogynous disc, as well as floral pedicel size and diameter of accrescent calyx in fruits, are the most important reproductive characters for species determination.
