The aim of this study is to examine the reasons why firms use ICTs at varying rates, by making a distinction between the two stages of their diffusion: their adoption and the intensity of their use. What are the differences between Internet adopters (in terms of their internal organization and external environment) that explain the intensity with which they use this technology? Furthermore, do these processes vary according to the type of area in which firms are located (urban vs. rural)? A model of technological diffusion is constructed that merges two types of models: those that concentrate on epidemic effects and the so-called equilibrium models that consider the decision to adopt new technologies as a result of an economic calculation by firms. To test this model, we use data drawn from a recent French national survey of 5,200 industrial firms ("ICT and E-commerce", 2002). One striking result of this study is that we do not obtain a significant positive correlation between firm's size and Internet intensity of use. Moreover, though spatial disparities related to ICT adoption are no longer significant in France, they remain very important in the processes of ICT We are indebted to the two anonymous referees for their constructive comments and suggestions. We are also very grateful to the Editor, Prof. Johansson, for his encouragements, and to Eric Cahuzac and Nicolas Carayol for helpful discussions.
C HEVASSUS-LOZZA E. and G ALLIANO D. (2003) Local spillovers, firm organization and export behaviour: evidence from the French food industry, Reg. Studies 37 , 147-158. The objective of this paper is to determine the respective effects of spatial externalities (urban and industrial economies of agglomeration), specific internal characteristics (due to the organization of firms) and industrial spillovers (due to national specialization) on the export behaviour of firms. For this purpose, this econometric study, based on individual data of firms, distinguishes two aspects: firstly, the firms' decision to export or not; and, secondly its export performance. The first results confirm that the competitiveness of firms is not only due to the effect of national specialization, but also to firms specific advantages that are closely related to the characteristics of their spatial environment.Competitiveness, Spatial Externalities, Multi-plant Firms, Corporate Group, Food Industry,
GALLIANO D., MAGRINI M.-B. and TRIBOULET P. Marshall's versus Jacobs' externalities in firm innovation performance: the case of French industry, Regional Studies. This paper analyses the influence of different types of spatial externalities related to the location of firms on their innovation performance and how those externalities combine in the territories with regard to the Marshall-Jacobs dichotomy. The originality of this study also lies in the consideration of a larger definition of the firm, one that takes into account the location of all its units. Based on a dataset of French industrial firms and specific indicators to evaluate the specialization and/or diversification of the employment zones, the impacts of the spatial profile of the firm on its innovation performance are tested.
