O crescente consumo de verduras cruas como fonte de alimentação saudável pode trazer consequências nem sempre agradáveis como por exemplo, a disseminação de parasitoses. A verificação da presença de estruturas parasitárias em hortaliças reveste-se de interesse para a saúde pública uma vez que a maioria dessas verduras são comercializadas sem inspeção sanitária e controle sobre o estado higiênico desses produtos. Este trabalho teve por objetivo verificar a contaminação por parasitas intestinais humanos em alfaces comercializadas no município de Aracaju, Estado de Sergipe. Foram adquiridas alfaces em vários pontos comerciais (supermercado, mercado, mercearia e feira-livre). Após enxague em solução detergente biológico neutro, o líquido do lavado foi sedimentado e observado ao microscópio. Constatou-se que das 92 touceiras de alface examinadas 9,78% estavam contaminadas por formas larvais de ancilostomídeos e 18,49% por fragmentos de insetos e outros invertebrados. O supermercado foi o estabelecimento com o maior índice de contaminação, tanto parasitária quanto de fragmentos de insetos e outros invertebrados. As condições higiênico-sanitárias da cadeia produtiva influenciam sobremaneira no grau de contaminação dos vegetais comercializados, desde o tipo de adubação e água de irrigação utilizados no plantio até a manipulação e forma de exposição dos produtos ao consumidor.
