The aim of this study was to analyze the factors that influence spatial and temporal variations of the Oligochaeta assemblage in the Baía and Ivinhema Rivers, located in the Upper Paraná River floodplain (Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil). Samples of Oligochaeta were collected between February 2000 and November 2007. A total of 27 Oligochaeta species were identified. A Principal Component Analysis (PCA) of the physical and chemical variables was used to summarize the total variation in the data and to identify major environmental gradients. Detrended Correspondence Analysis (DCA) was conducted to verify possible spatial and temporal gradients in the Oligochaeta species distribution. The highest Oligochaeta species densities and richness values were recorded during limnophases. The intensity and amplitude of the potamophase influenced the density, richness and composition of Oligochaeta since many species were transported by high water current velocities and/or died due to the low oxygen levels that are characteristic of this phase. L. hoffmeisteri, P. descolei and A. pigueti were recorded in the potamophase and in the limnophase and we concluded that they are adapted to different conditions of rivers (lotic and lentic) due to the presence of these species during the entire study period in both rivers. Nevertheless, these species were dominant in the potamophase periods of these rivers as they have body adaptations to survive in these conditions. (Estado do Mato Grosso do Sul, Brasil). Contudo, essas e...
We conducted a study about invertebrates on artificial substrates with different antifouling paints in order to answer the following questions: 1) is there lower accumulation of organic matter on substrates with antifouling paints, 2) is invertebrate colonization influenced by the release of biocides from antifouling paints, 3) is the colonization of aquatic invertebrates positively influenced by the material accumulated upon the substrate surface and 4) is the assemblage composition of invertebrates similar among the different antifouling paints? To answer these questions, four structures were installed in the Baía River in February 1 st , 2007. Each structure was composed of 7 wood boards: 5 boards painted with each type of antifouling paints (T1, T2, T3, T4 and T5), one painted only with the primer (Pr) and the other without any paint (Cn). After 365 days, we observed a greater accumulation of organic matter in the substrates with T2 and T3 paint coatings. Limnoperna fortunei was recorded in all tested paints, with higher densities in the control, primer, T2 and T3. The colonization of Chironomidae and Naididae on the substrate was positively influenced by L. fortunei density. The non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) of the invertebrate community provided evidence of the clear distinction of invertebrate assemblages among the paints. Paints T2 and T3 were the most similar to the control and primer. Our results suggest that antifouling paints applied on substrates hinder invertebrate colonization by decreasing the density and richness of invertebrates. Keywords: colonization, biofouling, Limnoperna fortunei.
ABSTRACT. Oligochaeta (Annelida) of continental aquatic environments from Mato Grosso do Sul (Brazil). This study aimed a survey of Oligochaeta species in three diff erent regions of Mato Grosso do Sul state (Baía, Ivinhema and Negro) in diverse environments (rivers, lakes, connecting channels). We recorded 41 Oligochaeta species, distributed in fi ve families (Narapidae, Haplotaxidae, Opistocystidae, Alluroididae, and Naididae). The study showed Oligochaeta richness in river Negro regions in relation of regions degraded by human action.
Hydrologic regime of the Ivinhema river (Mato Grosso do Sul, State) and its influence on zoobenthic assemblage ABSTRACT. This study was developed in different environments of the Ivinhema river floodplain in order to analyze the spatial and temporal variation of benthic assemblages and their relationship with physical and chemical variables and water level. Samples were taken quarterly between February and November 2002 in four environments: Ivinhema main channel, Ipoitã channel, Patos lake (with direct connectivity) and Ventura lake (without connectivity). The system was characterized by a bimodal potamophase cycle with moderate intensities and large amplitudes, remaining in potamophase for 184 days in 2001 and 67 days in 2002. Physical and chemical parameters, summarized in a PCA, showed spatial and temporal variation. Moderate intensity and great width pulses were recorded. Physicochemical variables changed spatially and temporally. Nematoda, Corbiculidae, Oligochaeta, Acari, Ostracoda and Chironomidae were the most abundant taxa registered and the larvae of Chironomidae were the most predominant in the Ivinhema main channel, Ipoitã channel and Ventura lake. Total density changed between months, but the analysis of the structure of the assembly (CA) showed that the benthic assembly of the Ivinhema main channel is dissimilar to the ponds. The relationship between PCA and CA was not significant, indicating that the Ivinhema system had a complex structure and that the spatial uniformity of density and temporal uniformity of benthic assemblage is due to the gr...
