Abstract:Brazilian mammal fauna is considered to be the richest of the Neotropical region. However, in several regions of the country, there are gaps in the knowledge of its mammal fauna. Thus, we conducted a survey of the medium and large-sized mammal species in the fragmented Cerrado region in the southeast area of the state of Goiás. Nonlinear transects were conducted in 28 sessions over 13 months using direct observation methods, indirect observation methods (scratches, footprints, feces and lairs) and camera trapping. Twenty-five species belonging to eight orders were recorded. The species richness estimated by the Jackknife 1 method was 24.89 (±1.61) species in the transects and 16.88 (±1.29) species in camera trap, with stabilization of the species accumulation curves. Among the recorded species, 5 were endangered at the national level, and three were globally endangered. The high species richness found in the area in addition to the presence of endangered species highlights the need for conservation measures for the study site.
∙ Little is known about the ecology and biology of the Red‐legged Seriema (Cariama cristata), a large territorial South American bird. This study aimed to describe aspects of the home range and territoriality of C. cristata in an anthropized region of the Cerrado in the western central Brazil. Based on georeferenced observations, the Minimum Convex Polygon 100% (MCP) and Kernel density (95% and 50%) methods were used to construct home‐range maps for five family groups of C. cristata. The mean (± SD) home‐range sizes were estimated as 24.34 ± 13.31 ha (100% MCP), 20.13 ± 6.69 ha (fixed Kernel 95%) and 18.98 ± 7.64 ha (fixed Kernel 50%). There was little overlap among the home ranges of the different groups. Territorial defense observed included duetting vocalizations and agonistic encounters. We conclude that the home ranges of C. cristata have little overlap, and that the entire home range is treated as a territory and defended against intruders.
PERPECTIVES RELATED TO THE STUDY OF BIOLOGY UNDER THE LOOK OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTSABSTRACT This study aimed to find out how students define the biology, and aspects that demonstrate how the discipline of biology has been worked in public and private
