O presente artigo discute a docência na Educação Infantil (EI) e busca evidenciar, numa perspectiva crítica, as interfaces e os dilemas entre a formação inicial e a prática pedagógica com crianças de 0 a 5 anos e 11 meses de idade no cotidiano de escolas de Educação Infantil. Tomou-se os estudos de Rosemberg (1999), Rocha (1999), Kishimoto (1999; 2002), Kramer (2002; 2005), Gatti (2010; 2011), Santos (2017), Tardif (2002; 2005), Tardos e Szanto-Feder (2011), Rinaldi (2016), Martins Filho e Delgado (2016) e as narrativas de cinco professoras da rede pública e privada de Salvador que exercem a docência na EI para analisar entrelaçamentos entre a formação e a prática pedagógica. Do ponto de vista teórico-metodológico, parte-se de uma abordagem qualitativa de cunho exploratório, com a utilização de pesquisa bibliográfica e entrevista. Entre os achados da pesquisa destacam-se a formação como uma das estratégias para a consolidação da qualidade da Educação Infantil, a compreensão da criança como aquela que nutre os sentidos do ser professor e a demanda de uma didática da Educação Infantil que coloque a criança no centro do planejamento curricular e a considere como um sujeito de direitos, competente, rico de iniciativas e de curiosidades. Conclui-se que a docência na Educação Infantil ainda é experienciada pelos professores e pelas crianças em contextos desafiantes, tanto do ponto de vista da intencionalidade e do alcance das políticas públicas de formação de professores como das complexidades da prática pedagógica.
