This article examines the historical processes that shaped the development of archaeological practice in Angola during the Portuguese colonial period and the aftermath of political independence. Using published works, unpublished reports, and photographic records, we examine the research themes, actors, scholars, and institutions that influenced archaeological research in the country. We also used documents and museum collections in Angola and Portugal to create a GIS database of Angola's archaeological findings. This study highlights the events, personalities, and priorities that motivated earlier investigations, and the geographical distribution of prehistoric sites. We hope this study will be a resource for guiding future archaeological research in Angola.Résumé Cet article examine les processus historiques qui ont façonné le développement de la pratique archéologique en Angola pendant la période coloniale portugaise et par la suite de l'indépendance politique. Background:
Meningiomas are the most frequent benign head tumors, although spontaneous hemorrhage is a rare form of presentation of such lesions. Of all possible bleeding locations associated with them, the subdural space is one of the most uncommon, with very few cases reported worldwide.
Case Description:
A middle-aged woman presented with progressively worsening left-sided headache, initiated 2 weeks before, with no other complaints, denying any previous head trauma. Head computed tomography revealed a subacute left hemisphere subdural hematoma and left frontal, suggestive of meningioma on magnetic resonance imaging. Surgical treatment was performed with hematoma evacuation and lesion removal. Neuropathology showed a transitional meningioma with signs of hemorrhage. After surgery, no neurological deficits were registered, and headache abated.
Conclusion:
As we could not identify any other cause for the subacute subdural hematoma, hemorrhage from the meningioma was the most probable cause, and thus, we decided to remove it along with clot evacuation. Based on neuropathological findings, we propose an alternative mechanism for this spontaneous hemorrhage from the meningioma, involving the place where the periphery of the lesion insertion, the dura mater as the origin of the hemorrhage. Knowledge of this association could help define the best treatment in such cases.
Primary intraventricular haemorrhage (PIVH) is an uncommon type of intracerebral haemorrhage, accounting for only 0.31% of all strokes and 3.1% of all intracerebral haemorrhages. Due to the low incidence of PIVH, little is known about its clinical characteristics, risk factors, aetiologies, prognosis and treatment. Acute hydrocephalus is common and is associated with a poor prognosis. External ventricular drainage (EVD) could promptly reduce intracranial pressure by diverting cerebrospinal fluid and intraventricular blood; however, the incidence of complications such as central nervous system infection, catheter occlusion and rebleeding are relatively common. Despite being an invasive procedure, frontal minicraniotomy is an available therapeutic option to avoid complications of EVD. The authors report a case of a PIVH managed with frontal minicraniotomy and perform a literature review about epidemiological data, clinical features and treatment of PIVH.
Diatoms, a common siliceous alga, are effective paleoclimate and pollution indicators. They have been used in northern, eastern, and southern Africa as such because of well-documented ecologies of many taxa. In southwestern Africa, however, the country of Angola lacks similar modern assemblage studies. To close this gap, modern diatoms were sampled across four water bodies on the Humpata Plateau in southwestern Angola in the dry season of July 2019, with in-situ measurements of pH, conductivity, and total dissolved solids and laboratory analysis of cations and anions. This research concludes that bedrock determines local hydrochemistry. In addition, this exploratory study finds that diatoms in southwestern Angola can infer relative conductivities and trophic levels, but limited data hinder interpretations of diatom ecological preferences of pH, temperature, alkalinity, ions, and pollution, requiring further analyses. Such research is beneficial for both African diatomists interested in using accurate transfer functions across Africa to reconstruct paleoclimates as well as local communities and hydrologists interested in understanding water chemistry and pollution, given that these studied sites are vital water resources for local communities on the Humpata Plateau.
