Styrene–butadiene rubber compounds reinforced with commercial multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) in amounts between 0.5 and 10 parts per hundred of rubber (phr) were mixed in a two‐roll mill. A compound with 40 phr of carbon black (CB) was prepared as reference. From rheometric curves at five different temperatures (between 140°C and 180°C), a similar maximum torque and vulcanization time values in the samples reinforced with 10 phr of MWCNT and 40 phr of CB were obtained. The Kamal–Sourour model was used to analyze the influence of the MWCNT content and the vulcanization temperature on the cure rate and induction time. Then, through an Arrhenius plot, it became evident the effect of the reinforcement content on the activation energy of the vulcanization process. Mechanical properties of normalized sheets vulcanized at 160°C indicate that content between 5 and 10 phr of MWCNT are enough to reach a similar performance to that sample with 40 phr of CB. SEM analysis exhibits a good dispersion of MWCNT. Swelling experiments point out a similar absorption degree of toluene in the compounds with 5 phr of MWCNT and 40 phr of CB. POLYM. ENG. The reinforcement mechanism of carbon nanotubes (CNT) on styrene butadiene rubber is studied through dynamic and swelling tests. Compounds containing carbon black (CB) and an unfilled one were prepared for comparison purposes. The dynamic properties are interpreted through the Maier-Göritz model to distinguish the contributions of stable and unstable crosslinks to the storage modulus, finding that the unstable ones become more relevant in samples containing a CNT concentration higher than 5 phr. In addition, the crosslinks density estimated by swelling and the stable contribution obtained with dynamical properties present the same tendency with the CNT amount. The former presents lower values, which can be explained considering that only stable crosslinks remain in the equilibrium-swollen state, while in the second one both stable and unstable are considered. In addition, differences in the filler-polymer interaction mechanisms are observed according to the morphology and aspect ratio of CNT in contrast to CB.

The study of the reinforcement network in elastomer compounds is one of the most relevant issues for the application of these materials because their properties are strongly dependent on the obtained morphology. To this regard, the viscoelastic and dielectric behavior of vulcanized styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) reinforced with different amounts of carbon nanotubes (CNT) have been investigated and compared with the vulcanized unfilled SBR and the vulcanized SBR samples reinforced with a conventional amount of carbon black (40 phr). Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements have been carried out to highlight possible differences of the glass transition temperatures for all the reinforced compounds. The percolation threshold value of the nanocomposite samples has been estimated by dielectric analysis. Finally, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) measurements have been performed in tensile mode in the temperature range of −60 to 80 °C to obtain both E′ and E′′. From these experimental data, the master curve for each sample has been estimated by using the time–temperature superposition principle in combination with the vertical shift approach. From the analysis of this latter, the activation energy, associated to the thermal movement of the reinforcement network, has been calculated to better elucidate the reinforcement mechanism in the nanocomposites.

Considering elastomers nanocomposites, most of the works are focused on natural rubber, styrene butadiene rubber and rubber blends, while few of them deal with nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR). This article presents the reinforcing effect of two raw sodic montmorillonites (Mts) and one organoclay on NBR matrix prepared by the latex compounding method. Raw Mts increase the mechanical properties of neat matrices. A pseudoplastic behavior is observed with the incorporation of clays into the NBR latex, indicating interactions between polymer chains and clay sheets, in agreement with the results of zeta potential analysis. X‐ray diffraction evaluates changes in the interlayer distance of the clay, indicating the NBR intercalation phenomenon in all cases. Matrices with different clay proportions present variations in the mechanical properties, depending if the aggregation phenomenon is promoted. Morphological analysis of clays and nanocomposites as well as thermal analysis were performed. The variation in mechanical properties after an aging process was studied, evaluating the effects on the tensile strength, ultimate strain and 300% modulus. POLYM. ENG.
