La première renvoie au choix de l'analyste produisant un discours sur le social : faire le choix du petit c'est choisir son camp. Dans le champ de la sociologie, c'est ranger au placard ses velléités de surplomb et prendre le point de vue de certains acteurs, ceux qui n'ont pas voix au chapitre. 2 L'autre manière d'entendre ce titre éclaire la même question mais d'un point vue différent. Le choix se rapporte au petit : quelle est la marge de choix du petit ? Le débat de la marge d'autonomie de l'individu est une des plus vieilles antiennes de la sociologie. Tout un pan de celle-ci, longtemps écrasant en France, insiste sur les structures sociales de domination, de reproduction, ne laisse que peu de place à l'autonomie des individus et n'est guère attentive aux formes de distanciation qu'ont les acteurs vis-à-vis de leur rôle social. À contresens du paradigme déterministe, d'autres ont cherché à recentrer l'analyse sur l'individu, mais pour tomber trop souvent dans le travers de la rationalité instrumentale ; il n'est en effet guère satisfaisant de parler de « choix rationnel » lorsqu'il s'agit d'évoluer dans un cadre très largement oppressif.
