La pancreatitis aguda (PA), es un proceso inflamatorio a nivel del parénquima pancreático que conlleva a la activación intracelular de las enzimas pancreáticas. Hoy día, se considera, una de las enfermedades gastrointestinales más comunes en la practica clínica. Con frecuencia, la PA se presenta de forma leve y auto limitada, sin embargo, en otros casos puede tener un curso tórpido y conllevar a complicaciones mas severas. La litiasis biliar, es la causa mas común para el desarrollo de PA, sin embargo otros agentes etiológicos también figuran dentro de la fisiopatología. El dolor abdominal epigástrico severo, es el síntoma predominante en cuadros de PA pero puede acompañarse de otras manifestaciones clínicas. El manejo y tratamiento se pautan según el grado de severidad y compromiso sistémico existente, idealmente debe instaurarse de forma temprana para obtener mejores resultados y debe centrarse en medidas de soporte, control del dolor, reposición de líquidos, aporte calórico adecuado y en casos de enfermedad gravecontemplar otras intervenciones para mitigar complicaciones posteriores.
