A fauna silvestre no Brasil e no mundo encontra-se ameaçada devido à sua exploração desordenada. Um dos responsáveis pelo crescente aumento das espécies em risco de extinção é o tráfico de animais silvestres, com a manutenção ilegal de espécimes em cativeiro. Incentivadas pela Campanha Nacional de Proteção à Fauna Silvestre de 2008, unidades do Ibama em diversos Estados da Federação passaram a desenvolver ou ampliar projetos voltados à proteção da Fauna Silvestre, tais como: o Projeto Liberdade e Saúde, no Piauí; o Programa Permanente de Proteção à Fauna de São Paulo - P3F, em São Paulo; o Projeto Unidos Protegemos, no Paraná; e o Projeto do Centro de Triagem de Animais Silvestre - Cetas, de Lorena, em Parceria com Área de Soltura e Prefeitura de Pindamonhangaba, também em São Paulo. A análise desses projetos, realizada durante o cadastramento da Política Pública de Educação Ambiental do Ibama focada na Proteção da Fauna Silvestre, na Plataforma MonitoraEA, demonstrou que, embora haja consonância nos trabalhos desenvolvidos pelas unidades do Ibama nos Estados, há vários aspectos que necessitam ser aprimorados, como a realização de diagnósticos, previsão de momentos voltados ao monitoramento e avaliação dos processos, e o fortalecimento de uma estrutura integradora e potencializadora das ações.
