Este documento fornece uma visão geral da Internet das Coisas Industrial do termo em inglês Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), com ênfase no estudo dos desafios, tendências e oportunidades a respeito deste tema para desenvolvimento de diretrizes na contratação de projetos. A IIoT é possibilitada pelos mais recentes desenvolvimentos em tecnologias de transmissão, sensores, comunicação e protocolos que tornaram os projetos mais acessíveis a indústrias de menor porte. Porém, em decorrência dessa ampliação de possibilidades e ofertas, surge também os desafios com relação a padronização das aplicações e operacionalização. Por isso, neste artigo são abordados os desafios quanto a disponibilidade, eficiência energética, confiabilidade, escalabilidade, coexistência e interoperabilidade, segurança e privacidade. Ao tentar traçar as possíveis tendências, identifica-se que a tecnologia LPWAN é a forma mais promissora de transmissão de dados, devido suas características e benefícios com relação a eficiência energética, alcance e simplicidade da arquitetura. No entanto, muitos são os protocolos derivados dessa forma de transmissão, sendo que a padronização das aplicações na indústria pode ser inviável. Assim sendo, o trabalho propõe alguns modelos de contratação de serviços e projetos onde responsabilidades pelo bom funcionamento, de maneira harmoniosa com outras aplicações, sejam impostas aos fornecedores que devem garantir a estabilidade da solução. Além disso, t ambém se propõe a utilização de uma camada de middleware para possibilitar a coleta de dados gerados nessas aplicações, viabilizando os mais diversos cruzamentos destas informações que podem gerar insights valiosos com a utilização de algoritmos de Big Data e Machine Learning, que buscam a obtenção de vantagens competitivas propostas pela Indústria 4.0.
