Intergenerational Social Mobility in Slovakia. Paper offers actual findings on intergenerational social mobility in Slovakia, which is understood as mobility within a classbased stratification system. It relies on neo-weberian definition of social class and -based on theoretical and methodological reflection on the most used class schemas -it employs European Socio-economic Classification (ESeC). Authors distinguish between absolute and relative social mobility, referring to distinction between mobility induced by structural changes and social fluidity defined as chances to become a member of certain social class. Aim of the paper is to identify basic patterns of social mobility among men and women, including patterns of social mobility within different age cohorts. Presenting findings could contribute to filling the existing gap in this important field of sociological inquiry. In terms of absolute mobility, the most frequent form of mobility is represented by upward mobility, consisting mainly of "long" mobility. Among men, salariat and qualified manual workers represent classes with the strongest tendency to closeness. Among women, it holds true for salariat, lower professionals, and unqualified manual workers. In terms of relative mobility, chances to move within stratification system are unevenly distributed, especially at the top and the bottom of social structure. As result, identified "upgrade" of social class structure didn't lead to significant equalization of mobility chances to climb the stratification ladder. Ukazuje mieru rigidity systémov sociálnej stratifikácie, indikuje veľkosť sociálnych bariér medzi sociálnymi pozíciami a zloţitosť ich prekonávania a odkazuje k ţivotným šanciam príslušníkov rôznych spoločenských tried. The paper brings analyses of the transitions between employment, unemployment and inactivity during and after the period of the financial and economic crisis, using longitudinal micro-data from the European Union Survey on Income and Living Conditions. The empirical analysis consists of two steps. An overall picture is obtained by computing transition probabilities and Shorrocks' summary mobility index. Effects of personal and household characteristics are explored through multinomial logit models. Our results confirm the low level of labour market mobility in Slovakia and the role of some determinants highlighted by previous research. In addition, analysis takes into account several new determinants that have not been included in the previous analyses.
The article provides analyses of the mobility and resilience to mobility among low-wage earners in four Central European (CE) countries. It examines transitions into higher-paid jobs, unemployment/inactivity, and the stability of low-wage status. In addition to standard transition matrices and summary mobility indices, it employs multinomial logit models with the aim of identifying individual determinants of low-wage earners’ prospects. The findings show that the CE countries do not represent a homogeneous group in terms of presence of low wages when the period of 2010–2016 is considered. In regard to future prospects, low-wage employees in the countries with higher incidence of low pay are more likely to reproduce their status, as compared with countries with lower incidence. Upward mobility is more likely among younger, high-educated employees and among those who work in “better” occupations.
The paper focuses on alienated work, a classical sociological concept which attracted a lot of attention. It discusses its roots in Marx's works, its dimensions, and issues of essentialism and human nature. Against the background of the great variety of approaches to alienated work in the 20 th century, attention is paid to systematization and review of main arguments both in theoretical and empirical studies, with the emphasis on the Marxist interpretations. High level of abstraction, difficulty with empirical validation on the one hand and loss of critical power and normativity through use in empirical surveys on the other hand belonged to the most frequent challenges discussed so far. The article explores a possibility how critical social theory could contribute to the revitalization of the concept of alienated work. It focuses on the arguments of Axel Honneth regarding work, including his early critique of Habermas and his later treatment of work within the theory of recognition.
