Zu beiden Einaktern schrieb Modest Tschaikowski, Bruder des Komponisten, die Libretti. Bei beiden steht eine eingeschlossene Frau im Zentrum der Handlung. Iolanta, die blinde Tochter des altprovençalischen Königs René, wird in einem idyllischen Garten von der Umwelt abgeschirmt, dort auch von der Liebe überrascht. Die Verwicklungen der Romanze bringen sie zuerst zur Erkenntnis ihres Handicaps, dann zur Mobilisierung von Selbstheilungskräften. Stephen Lawless inszenierte die naive ritterromantische Handlung zunächst ganz in Weiß, mit Mänteln und Uniformen der zur Neige gehenden Zarenzeit im Inneren einer Halbkugel, die von außen wie eine Druckkammer anmutet. Dergleichen ist angebracht für das, was Dmitry Belosselsky als Monarch in den Raum stemmt. Aber auch für den Tenoreinsatz des jugendlichen Liebhabers Saimir Pirgu. Olga Mykytenko, die Titelheldin, tendiert neben diesen beiden Stützen der Gesellschaft zum Forcieren. Mit Vassily Sinaisky leitete ein Handwerker alten Schlags das RSO. Dank seiner Routine und der Aufmerksamkeit für Details geriet manche Stelle zum Schluchzen schön. Doch dem Ende zu glitt der Tonsatz ins unbeholfen Grobe: Mit Inbrunst kopuliert da russisch-orthodoxer Grundton mit dem der Zarentreue. Erst im buchstäblich letzten Moment ließ Lawless ein paar Rotgardisten hereinstürmen und dieser Gespensterstunde eines Ancien Régime ein jähes Ende bereiteten. Die Revolutionswächter gestalteten nach der Pause, während der die Treppen und Umgänge des Hintergrunds nach vorn rückten, auch die Hölle, in die Dante in Begleitung von Vergil hinabsteigt. Dieser finstere Ort rahmt Rachmaninows tödliche Eifersuchtstragödie: Überdeutlich werden die Chiffren für »verkehrte Verhältnisse« am Ende des ersten Weltkriegs. Anders als das Märchen der Tschaikowskis endet die Liebesprobe, der Francesca von ihrem eifersüchtigen Mann -einem Militärmachthaber der Renaissance -unterzogen wird, mit Tod und Verderben. >Unmöglich< findet der Tonsetzer Aiwa in Lulu seinen eigenen Gedanken, eine Oper über das unwiderstehliche Niemandskind, die Protagonistin des Stücks, zu verfassen. Wenn der reale Komponist Alban Berg an jener Stelle die glissandierenden Anfangsakkorde seines Wozzeck hineinmontiert, setzt er dieses Selbstzitat nicht nur als ironisch-vieldeutigen Kommentar. Er fügt sich damit auch in eine Reihe großer Opernkomponisten von Mozart bis Richard Strauss ein, die den Eingeweihten ähnliche Querverweise zwischen ihren Werken boten. Freilich belässt es Berg nicht dabei, das Element aus der älteren Partitur der neueren einzuarbeiten. Nach der dynamisch etwas stärker markierten, doch ansonsten wörtlichen Übernahme des Motivs unterzieht er es einer Transformation, indem er die Notenwerte dehnt, die Akkordkonstellation -ohne das Glissando -wiederholt und die Geste schließlich in eine abwärts stürzende Bewegung auflöst.
