Com a abertura dos portos (1808) e os acordos firmados entre a coroa portuguesa e a Inglaterra, os protestantes puderam se estabelecer de forma continua no Brasil. Na Paraíba não foi diferente do restante do país tendo relatos de protestantes no estado como os de José Bates (1825) e Perish Kidder (1839). Todavia, o primeiro trabalho missionário que resultou na implantação duradoura de uma igreja protestante na Paraíba só aconteceu em 1878. A sua implantação e desenvolvimento no estado não foi tranquilo passando por perseguição em diversos lugares que iam desde de apelidos a assassinato. Os piores casos aconteceram no interior o estado e quando as Santas Missões estavam na cidade.
A Igreja Adventista do Sétimo Dia instalou-se na fazenda Baixa Verde na então vila de Queimadas em 1938. Em 1940, o prédio, onde eram realizados os cultos, foi atacado por cerca de 300 católicos que o apedrejaram e espancaram o pastor Moyses S. Nigri. O evento foi relatado, no mesmo ano, na Revista Adventista por Jeronimo G. Garcia, que presenciou o ocorrido, e por H. O. Olson, presidente da Missão Nordeste. Nigri só descreve o ocorrido em 1960 e em 1964 na Revista Adventista e em sua biografia lançada em 2014. Este trabalho tem como objetivo analisar a biografia de Nigri, utilizando-se de uma perspectiva histórico cultural, para compreender os conflitos religiosos que ocorriam em uma parte da sociedade paraibana do início da década de 1940.
