Nous sommes construits en mémoire. Federico Fellini Été 1957. La reconstitution de la destruction d'une cité, ce foudroiement d'une ville dans des fulgurances cendrées de mèches et d'épars, le séduit. Seven Thunders (les Sept Tonnerres) est mis en chantier. Le générique 3 est précédé d'un montage d'1mn40 d'archives, dont l'origine n'est pas créditée, mais qui datent à l'évidence de l'avant-guerre, dans les années trente. Sous une caméra agile, voici le quai du Vieux-Port, Notre-Dame de la Garde, le bas de la Canebière, où un travelling avant nous rapproche du patinage métallique des tramways, tandis qu'au second plan flotte dans un ciel serein la géométrie molle des voiles et des mâts. Dans les ruelles du Panier, un léger mistral berce les lessives fraîches. En fond de cadre, barrant les velléités d'improbables départs, le Pont transbordeur affiche son gigantesque mécano, dont Lazlo Moholy-Nagy avait tiré, en 1929, de modernistes effets et dont René Allio, soucieux de coller à l'imaginaire marseillais, recomposa la silhouette en 1990 dans Transit. Un commentaire off, éloquent et nostalgique, transporte le spectateur dans l'actualité de la narration, coulant le passé dans le présent et légitimant par là l'effet de réalité escompté : La France a toujours commencé à Marseille, au Vieux-Port, c'est le début d'un monde. On aborde là et on va tout droit, par la Canebière jusqu'à Strasbourg, le pont de Kehl, le Rhin et le reste, jusqu'où l'on veut. C'est toujours tout droit.
