Article Info AbstractKeywords: maintenance econometric airline operations costs economies of scaleThe aim of this study is to investigate whether the size of airline operations has any statistically significant effect on the costs of its aircraft maintenance. By investigating the impact of the extent of operations on unit costs of carriers, it was inspected the existence of economies of scale in providing maintenance services. Through an econometric model of maintenance costs, it was estimated the influence of key drivers such as the aircraft average stage length, aircraft size and load factors. It was performed an application to the Brazilian airline industry. The empirical model makes use of a FixedEffects Estimator (FE), using a four-dimensional panel data of flight segments, carriers and equipment over a period of ten years. Results showed support for the hypothesis of scale economies in maintenance services. The academic gain of this article is through econometric analysis identify factors that influence the maintenance costs for airlines. Noting that the largest companies have lower maintenance costs (economies of scale), enables administrators and air planners a better understanding of the phenomenon, as well as a better use of the resources available. For smaller companies, outsourcing or sharing of maintenance with other companies, can result in major savings and profitability.
In recent decades, the emissions of air transport industry pollutants and their impact on human health attract increased focus. The continued growth of air traffic and public awareness has transformed this field into one of the most important topics of commercial aviation. In the next 20 years, the estimated global demand for air transport will grow by an average of 5%. One of the direct consequences would be the increase in emissions, affecting significantly the communities around airports. The aim of this paper is to present an econometric model forecast of pollutant emissions generated by domestic flights in Salvador Airport. This model includes a derivative study of demand until the year 2020, considering the number of flights and emissions generated in the takeoff and landing cycles. Results present a predictive model for the number of pollutant emissions.
Palavras-chave: PBN, CDA, TAAM, Desempenho, Performance-Based Navigation. Abstract:The introduction of Performance-Based Navigation (PBN) procedures represents the search for optimization and better utilization of airspace, and its deployment is crucial for modernization programs of air navigation in progress in several countries, including Brazil. The implementation of this new type of procedure introduced changes in aircraft operation, the insertion of new procedures for air traffic controllers and pilots and the introduction of automation systems to support air operations. The aim of this paper is to analyze the benefits of performing PBN procedures and use of Continuous Descent Approaches (CDA) on the route Galeão-Guarulhos. The study applied fast-time simulation with the Total Airspace and Airport Modeler (TAAM) and considered nine different aircraft models. Fuel consumed is used as a performance parameter. Study results showed the benefits of applying these techniques vary according aircraft models..Keywords: PBN, CDA, TAAM, Performance-Based Navigation.
The growing demand for air transportation has led to an increase in worldwide air traffic inefficiency due to capacity constraints. The impacts associated with this situation can be reduced through operational changes. To better handle the problem, the Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) and the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) program suggest Performance-Based Navigation (PBN) as a solution. The Area Navigation (RNAV) and Required Navigation Performance (RNP) approaches belong to the group of PBN procedures. These procedures allow for a more efficient use of airspace by reducing route distances, fuel consumption and perceived aircraft noise. This article quantifies the benefits of PBN systems for two indicator parameters—fuel burn and flight time—and compares PBN systems to conventional instrument navigation procedures. The case studies use five airports in Brazil. The results of this analysis show that the benefits of the PBN approach vary with aircraft type and individual route characteristics.
