CO2 laser‐induced infrared multiphoton decomposition (IRMPD) and SF6 photosensitized decomposition (LPD) of silacyclobutane (SCB) and 1,3‐disilacyclobutane (DSCB) in the gas phase results in the very efficient deposition of Si/C/H and SiC materials, and it is inferred that the process is dominated by formation of transient silene; silene rearrangement to methylsilylene; silene and methylsilylene dehydrogenation; and polymerization of SiCHn (n < 4) species. The deposits are sensitive to oxygen.
Decomposition and SiC formation are favoured with IRMPD experiments conducted with high‐energy fluxes. The laser technique is promising for low‐temperature chemical vapour deposition of amorphous SiC.
In this study a completely stirred tank reactor was used to study the effect of sulfide to nitrate (S/N) ratio on sulfide removal while nitrate was used as electron acceptor. Several S/N ratios were studied for this purpose ranging from 0.3 to 2.4 mol/mol. The complete sulfide removal was achieved when S/N ratio 0.85 mol/mol was used with the autotrophic denitrification efficiency up to 80 %. No nitrite accumulation was observed, and the main product of sulfide oxidation was sulfate. Dissimilatory nitrogen reduction to ammonia occurred and subsequently, elemental sulfur accumulated while S/N ratio was higher than 1.3 mol/mol. The specific autotrophic denitrification rates under S/N ratios 0.8 and 1.2 were 5 and 26 mg g(-1) h(-1) (N-NO3 (-), VSS), respectively. Thiobacillus denitrificans and Thiomicrospira denitrificans were detected in the reactor by fluorescent in situ hybridization, but their overall representation was not more than 5 % of the entire microbial populations.
Biogas, digested sludge and sludge liquor are the main products of anaerobic sludge digestion. Each of the products is influenced significantly by specific conditions of the digestion process. Therefore, any upgrade of the digestion technology must be considered with regard to quality changes in all products. Microaeration is one of the methods used for the improvement of biogas quality. Recently, microaeration has been proved to be a relatively simple and highly efficient biological method of sulfide removal in the anaerobic digestion of biosolids, but little attention has been paid to comparing the quality of digested sludge and sludge liquor in the anaerobic and microaerobic digestion and that is why this paper primarily deals with this area of research. The results of the long-term monitoring of digested sludge quality and sludge liquor quality in the anaerobic and microaerobic digesters suggest that products of both technologies are comparable. However, there are several parameters in which the 'microaerobic' products have a significantly better quality such as: sulfide (68% lower) and soluble chemical oxygen demand (COD) (33% lower) concentrations in the sludge liquor and the lower foaming potential of the digested sludge.
