H. has previously been responsible for the editions of Livy 1-6 (1991) and 31-44 (1978-88) in the Tusculum series, having earlier produced a similar edition, under the sole imprint of Artemis, of Books 39-45 (1972). In the present volume, the text and facing German translation of Books 7-10 occupy pp. 6-479 (unlike the Bude series, the pagination is not double). There follow (pp. 480-508) the periochae and fragments-including the new fragment of Book 11 published by Bravo and Griffin in Athenaeum 1988, pp. 447-521-of the second decade, together with a concordance of H.'s numbering of the fragments with those adopted by Weissenborn-Miiller, Schlesinger in the Loeb and Jal in the Bude. On pp. 509-15 H. prints a list of the passages where his reading differs from that of Walters and Conway in the OCT. For these passages-but for no others-an apparatus is provided. The information on manuscript readings is taken from Walters-Conway, but adapted to the sigla used by Ogilvie in the OCT of the first pentad: no stemma or explanation of the system is offered. H. prints Watt's rae}sentibus (C&.M 1991, 216) at 7.31.11, Shackleton Bailey's illius (RFIC 1986, 322) at 8.24.16, and two readings argued for by Ogilvie (YCS 1973, 164-6)-the deletion of fortes uiri (the words are in all the manuscripts, not in mL alone, as H. states: and deletion was in fact first tentatively suggested by Walters) at 9.27.13, and frater-Fabium Caesonem at 9.36.2. Readers wondering where to find the arguments advanced by these scholars will need to consult the bibliography on p. 663. Pp. 517-614 contain the ' Erlauterungen', a series of explanatory notes, mostly brief, with the lemmata taken from the translation. Next (pp. 615-61) comes the somewhat strangely entitled 'Einfuhrung', which consists largely of a summary of Livy's narrative. The book concludes with the bibliography, a tabular' Inhaltsiibersicht', with references to parallel sources, a chronological table, a list of consuls, dictators and magistri equitum between 366 and 293, and an index of proper names.
