(Allier, Auvergne). The study of the La Couronne site in Molles (Allier) is part of the research movement concerning high-rise fortified habitat during the early Middle Ages initiated in the early 2000s. The research excavations initiated in 2010 have unearthed the particularly well preserved remains of a fortress built at the end of the fourth or early fifth century, in the north-eastern periphery of the ancient city of Clermont. The starting point of this work was the study of a large church built, at the earliest, around the year 450 and subjected to important transformations during the sixth century. This has undeniably made the fortress an important religious centre during the Merovingian period and played a leading role in the organization and evolution of the site throughout the Early Middle Ages. This article presents an initial assessment of the results of the research conducted on this building and its environment.
