O presente trabalho foi realizado em duas etapas complementares, com os seguintes objetivos: 1) descrever uma amostra aleatória de escolas públicas (de 5ª a 8ª séries), quanto às taxas de evasão, reprovação, transferências e recuperação; 2) coletar dados sobre o trabalho realizado por professor e alunos em sala de aulas e analisar através deles, até que ponto é válida a afirmação de que o fracasso do aluno é produzido dentro da própria classe. Para isso, selecionamos, aleatoriamente, e trabalhamos com 6 escolas públicas localizadas numa cidade do interior do Estado de São Paulo. Nossos principais dados indicam que: 25% dos alunos são reprovados no decorrer das quatro séries finais do 1º grau e 16% abandonam a escola neste mesmo período; em função do modelo teórico utilizado para a análise do trabalho em classe, podemos dizer que o fator mais determinante do fracasso escolar ocorre realmente dentro da própria sala de aula.
This research work was done with the following aims: a) to describe a random sample of public schools (5 to 8 high school series), failure, changing school and activities to cover deficiencies; and b) to collect data and to analyse how effective is the assertion that failure is done within the classroom. Aiming to answer these questions, we took randomly 238 pupils of 45 classes of 6 public schools, in a midland city of São Paulo State. Our main data show that: 25% pupils fall in course of four final series of high school and 16% leave school in this same period; the variables studied did explain a sugnificative amount of the school failure; according the theoretical model used, the most decisive element of pupil's failure occurs really within the classroom itself

RESUMOO que vamos expor neste artigo é o resultado de um levantamento sobre o fracasso escolar nas escolas públicas de Ribeirão Preto/SP, e, principalmente, o produto de nossas reflexões e esforços para explicar esses resultados, fundamen¬ dos-nos na teoria psicogenética.Num levantamento feito por nós em 6 escolas públicas de Ribeirão Preto (SP) com o objetivo de conhecer e explicar as taxas de aprovação, reprovação e recuperação nas 5 a a 8ª séries(**), verificamos entre outras coisas que:-25% dos alunos são aprovados no decorrer das quatro séries finais do lº grau; 38% conseguem promoção direta e 17% conseguem promoção com recuperação nesse mesmo período de escolaridade.Como justificar esses dados? Como explicar que pouco mais da metade dos alunos (55%) conseguem promoção nas quatro séries finais do 1º grau? Uma explicação possível pode ser dada à luz da teoria psicogenética(***).(*) FFCLRP-USP. (***) Gostaria de acrescentar que o curso de Didática Geral por nós ministrado durante 20 anos aos licenciados em Química e Biologia nesta Faculdade, caminhou sempre nessa mesma direção, qual seja, em apresentar o produto de nosso empenho em retirar da teoria piagetiana, não uma possível aplicação metodológica mas, oferecer aos futuros professores, um instrumento teórico capaz de ajudá-los na reflexão, compreensão, explicação e solução dos problemas cotidianos das salas de aula.
