El metabolismo urbano es una es una metodología muy utilizada en los estudios de planeación territorial en países desarrollados. Sin embargo, todavía presenta problemas relacionados en la confiabilidad y en la asimetría de los datos, provocando incertidumbres aún no resueltas. De ahí, la necesidad de definir una forma estandarizada de comparar el metabolismo entre ciudades bajo un solo marco de referencia. Este trabajo propone el método de Índices Metabólicos (IM), aplicado en la Zona Metropolitana de Toluca (ZMT), localizada en la parte central de México entre los años 2000 y 2019. Para ello, se determinó su metabolismo urbano a partir del Análisis de Flujo de Materiales y Energía (AFME) sobre los 16 municipios que la comprenden, y con ello, lo índices de obtuvieron con el Análisis de Componentes Principales (ACP). Como resultado, se demostró que la ZMT incrementó sus flujos de electricidad, combustible, agua y materiales, y con ello, sus desechos; lo que la hace un área insustentable. Mientras que con los IM se observó que los municipios centrales tienen mayores consumos (metabolismo alto); las periferias orientadas hacia el sureste y noroeste muestran parámetros de crecimiento y urbanismo debido a la cercanía con la Ciudad de México (metabolismo medio) y los municipios al oeste de la centralidad conservan actividades primarias a pesar del crecimiento urbano (metabolismo bajo). Ante esta heterogeneidad, es necesario replantear el desarrollo urbano de la ZMT para gestionar sus flujos metabólicos y con los índices es posible comprender su complejidad urbana.
