Resumo Discute as fontes das intendências municipais, sobretudo as correspondências, como subsídios importantes para a compreensão das relações entre a população pobre e a administração pública durante a Primeira República brasileira. Tem como fio condutor o discurso dos indivíduos que remetiam à municipalidade de Santa Maria cartas em que autodeclaravam pobreza, a fim de investigar quais as estratégias de sobrevivência desse grupo e quais os recursos de assistência pública e privada disponíveis no interior do Rio Grande do Sul. Traçando o perfil da pobreza, analisa as diferenças de gênero, evidenciadas nas justificativas dos pedidos de socorro à intendência.
O artigo tem como objetivo abordar um novo padrão de sociabilidade de gênero forjado nos ambientes educativos e científicos da cidade do Rio de Janeiro nos anos 1940 e 1950. Ali se institucionalizaram práticas de mediação cultural dirigidas para a educação em ciências e a divulgação científica. Naqueles espaços surgiram oportunidades de recrutamento de estudantes e profissionais para carreiras científicas em instituições que após a Segunda Guerra Mundial passaram a oferecer oportunidades de profissionalização para mulheres. Essas questões são tratadas à luz da relação entre Newton Dias dos Santos (1916-1989), cientista mediador cultural, e Dyrce Lacombe (1932-), uma jovem estudante de quem ele foi professor e orientou para seguir a carreira científica.
O presente artigo busca dialogar com a atual historiografia que versa sobre a assistência, tendo como escopo principal a conceituação da pobreza por meio de um estudo de caso de sobre o Serviço de Assistência Pública no Rio Grande do Sul, durante as primeiras décadas do século XX, em especial, na cidade de Santa Maria/RS. As fontes analisadas referem-se a publicações da época, cujo objetivo era explicar como deveria ser praticada a assistência no estado e no município.
