Low concentration alcohols produced by state-of-theart biological fermentation restrict subsequent purification processes for chemical, pharmaceutical, biofuel, and other applications. Herein, a rarely reported cucurbituril[n] (n = 6, 8) is employed to pattern the thin-film composite membranes with controllable and quantifiable nanostrand structures through a host−guest strategy. The resulting nanofiltration membrane with such morphology is the first report that exhibits excellent separation performance for isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and water, condensing the initial 0.5 wt % IPA aqueous solution to 9.0 wt %. This not only provides a novel strategy for patterning nanostructural morphology but also makes nanofiltration membranes promising for alcohol condensation in the biological fermentation industry that may reduce energy consumption and postprocessing costs.
Sepsis remains a major cause of mortality in intensive care units, better therapies are urgently needed. Gram-negative bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is an important trigger of sepsis. We have demonstrated that berberine (Ber) protects against lethality induced by LPS, which is enhanced by yohimbine (Y) pretreatment, and Ber combined with Y also improves survival in septic mice. However, the precise mechanisms by which Y enhances protection of Ber against LPS - induced lethality remain unclear. The present study confirmed that simultaneously administered Y also enhanced protection of Ber against LPS-induced lethality. Ber or/and Y attenuated liver injury, but not renal injury in LPS-challenged mice. Ber or/and Y all inhibited LPS-stimulated IκBα, JNK and ERK phosphorylation, NF-κB activation as well as TNF-α production. Ber also increased IL-10 production in LPS-challenged mice, which was enhanced by Y. Furthermore, Ber or/and Y all suppressed LPS-induced IRF3, TyK2 and STAT1 phosphorylation, as well as IFN-β and IP-10 mRNA expression in spleen of mice at 1 h after LPS challenge. Especially, Y enhanced the inhibitory effect of Ber on LPS-induced IP-10 mRNA expression. In vitro experiments further demonstrated that Y significantly enhanced the inhibitory effect of Ber on TNF-α production in LPS-treated peritoneal macrophages, Ber combined with Y promoted LPS-induced IL-10 production and LPS-stimulated IκBα, JNK, ERK and IRF3 phosphorylation and NF-κB activation were also suppressed by Ber or/and Y pretreatment in peritoneal macrophages. Taken together, these results demonstrate that Y enhances the protection of Ber against LPS-induced lethality in mice via attenuating liver injury, upregulating IL-10 production and suppressing IκBα, JNK, ERK and IRF3 phosphorylation. Ber combined with Y may be an effective immunomodulator agent for the prevention of sepsis.
Introduction: High mercury (Hg) concentrations affect the chlorophyll in leaves, thereby modifying leaf spectra. Hyperspectra is a promising technique for the rapid, nondestructive evaluation of leaf Hg content. In this study, we investigated Hg contents and reflective hyperspectra of reed leaves (Phragmites communis) in a gold mining (Jilin province, China). Spectral parameters sensitive to Hg content were identified through basic spectral transformations, continuous wavelet transformation (CWT), and spectral indices techniques. Leaf Hg inversion models were developed using stepwise multiple linear regression, partial least squares regression, and random forest algorithms. Outcomes: The results indicated that: 1) leaf Hg content decreased with increasing distance from the mine: Jiapigou (JPG) > Erdaocha (EDC) > Laojingchang (LJC) > Erdaogou (EDG) > Lingqian (LQ) > Weishahe (WSH). 2) Hg-sensitive wavelengths were primarily in the visible region; CWT increased the correlation between hyperspectral data and leaf Hg content, and improved the regression and accuracy of inversion; 3) the continuum removal-CWT-stepwise multiple linear regression was better for estimating low leaf Hg content; while the differential spectral index-partial least squares regression was better for estimating high leaf Hg content. Conclusion: These hyperspectral inversion methods could be used for rapid, nondestructive monitoring of wetland plants.
Runoff plots are important for soil loss measurements, and increasing numbers of plots use automatic equipment. To choose equipment with appropriate capacities, the peak flow rate must be known. The peak flow rate is also an important parameter in the modified universal soil loss equation (MUSLE) which calculate the soil loss from upland slope. The available peak flow rate equations are primarily for the watershed scale, not for small drainage areas like runoff plot. This study's purpose was to derive an equation suitable for the small drainage areas. A total of 149 runoff events on 5 runoff plots were used to develop a peak flow rate equation for the hillslope scale. All plots are located in the Tuanshangou catchment, Zizhou county, Shaanxi province, China. Dimensionless analyses were used to determine the equation form of linear regression analyses. The results revealed that the peak flow rate was significantly correlated with plot area, slope steepness, runoff depth, rainfall depth and the maximum 30-min rainfall intensity. Two equations were developed to estimate peak flow. The model efficiencies of both equations exceeded 0.9. The equations developed in this study Water Resour Manage (2017) represent an important complement to existing peak flow rate equations. These new equations will facilitate the design of soil conservation practices and/or the selection of flow-observation equipment for small drainage areas.
Background Enhancer of Zeste homologue 2 (EZH2) is a polycomb group gene and an epigenetic regulator that inhibits transcription, a modification associated with gene silencing. EZH2 plays an essential role in humoral and cell-mediated adaptive immunity. The purpose of the current study is to investigate the prognostic potential of EZH2 and to comprehensively analyse the correlation between EZH2 and immune infiltration in multiple cancer cases, especially liver hepatocellular carcinoma. Methods EZH2 expression across cancers was explored through Oncomine, HPA, and GEPIA2. Additionally, the prognostic value of EZH2 analysis across cancers was based on the GEPIA2, TCGA portal, Kaplan–Meier Plotter, and LOGpc databases. Based on GO and KEGG analyses, GSEA helped demonstrate the biological processes through which EZH2 might lead to HCC development. GEPIA and TIMER were adopted to detect the possible relationship of EZH2 expression with tumour-infiltrating immune cells (TIICs). Results EZH2 overexpression levels were associated with poor prognosis of cancer, especially hepatocellular carcinoma. A high EZH2 expression level is related to a poor prognosis of HCC, especially in disease histology and stage III. The EZH2 expression level was positively correlated with critical gene markers of TAMs, M2 macrophages, M1 macrophages, and monocytes. Further analysis revealed that EZH2 genes were mainly related to DNA recombination, mitotic cell cycle phase transition, and chromosome segregation. Conclusion EZH2 plays an essential role in the immune microenvironment and is a potential prognostic marker and immunotherapy target for hepatocellular carcinoma.
