The carbonate sedimentary record contains diverse compositions and textures that reflect the evolution of oceans and atmospheres through geological time. Efforts to reconstruct paleoenvironmental conditions from these deposits continue to be hindered by the need for process-based models that can explain observed shifts in carbonate chemistry and form. Traditional interpretations assume minerals precipitate and grow by classical ion-by-ion addition processes but are unable to reconcile a number of unusual features contained in Proterozoic carbonates. The realization that diverse organisms produce high Mg carbonate skeletal structures by non-classical pathways involving amorphous intermediates raises the question of whether similar processes are also active in sedimentary environments. This study examines the hypothesis that non-classical pathways to mineralization are the physical basis for some of the carbonate morphologies and compositions observed in natural and laboratory settings. We designed experiments with a series of different solution Mg : Ca ratios and saturation environments to investigate the effects on carbonate phase, Mg content, and morphology. Our observations of diverse carbonate mineral compositions and textures suggest geochemical conditions bias the mineralization pathway by a systematic relationship to Mg : Ca ratio and the abundance of carbonate ions. Environments with low Mg levels produce calcite crystallites with 0-12 mol% MgCO 3 . In contrast, the combination of high initial Mg : Ca and rapidly increasing saturation opens a non-classical pathway that begins with extensive precipitation of an amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC). This phase slowly transforms to aggregates of very high Mg calcite nanoparticles whose structures and compositions are similar to natural disordered dolomites. The non-classical pathways are favored when the local environment contains sufficient Mg to inhibit calcite growth through increased solubility-a thermodynamic factor, and achieves saturation with respect to ACC on a timescale that is shorter than the rate of aragonite nucleation-a kinetic factor. Aragonite is produced when Mg levels are high but saturation is insufficient for ACC precipitation. The findings provide a physical basis for anecdotal claims that the interplay of kinetic and thermodynamic factors underlies patterns of carbonate precipitation and suggest the need to expand traditional interpretations of geological carbonate formation to include non-classical pathways to mineralization.

Various techniques have been developed in the past to measure the different parameters in two-phase flow. Among them, the multi-sensor conductivity probe is one of the most commonly used techniques because of its good overall performance. Recently, more advanced techniques, such as high-speed optical imaging and fast x-ray densitometry, have matured and become easily accessible. The main objective of this work is to compare and integrate these different techniques, to achieve a more accurate and complete measurement of two-phase flow. In this study, a double-sensor conductivity probe is used to measure the local time-averaged parameters along the radial direction of a 2.54 cm ID round pipe. An x-ray densitometry system is used to measure the chordal averaged void fraction and gas velocity. A high-speed camera system is employed to provide a visualization of the two-phase flow structure and obtain the line-averaged gas velocity. The unique advantages and main uncertainties of these three techniques are analyzed by considering their measuring principles and possible issues in practical measurements. From this, a method is developed to integrate the data obtained by the optical and x-ray systems into the probe signal processing. Better accuracy can be achieved using this method for various local two-phase flow parameters, including the void fraction, bubble velocity and superficial gas velocity, compared to the original probe measurements.

The crystal structures for the three perovskites, CaSnO(3), YAlO(3), and LaAlO(3), were geometry optimized at the density functional theory level for a wide range of simulated isotropic pressures up to 80 GPa. The connections between the geometry optimized bond lengths, R(M-O), the values of the electron density, ρ(r(c)), the local kinetic, G(r(c)), potential, V(r(c)), energy densities, H(r(c)), and the Laplacian, ∇(2)(r(c)), at the bond critical points, r(c), for the M-O nonequivalent bonded interactions were examined. With increasing pressure, ρ(r(c)) increases along four distinct trends when plotted in terms of the Al-O, Ca-O, Sn-O, Y-O, and La-O bond lengths, but when the bond lengths were plotted in terms of ρ(r(c))/r where r is the periodic table row number of the M atoms, the data scatter along a single trend modeled by the power law regression expression R(M-O) = 1.41(ρ(r(c))/r)(-0.21), an expression that is comparable with that obtained for the bonded interactions for a large number of silicate and oxides crystals, R(M-O) = 1.46(ρ(r(c))/r)(-0.19) and that obtained for a relatively large number of hydroxyacid molecules R(M-O) = 1.39(s/r)(-0.22) where s is the Pauling bond strength of a bonded interaction. The similarity of the expressions determined for the perovskites, silicate and oxides crystals, and hydroxyacid molecules suggest that the bonded interactions in molecules and crystal are not only similar and comparable. The close correspondence of the expressions for the perovskites, the silicate and oxide crystals, and the molecules indicates that Pauling bond strength and ρ(r(c)) are comparable measures of the bonded interactions, the larger the accumulation of the electron density between the bonded atoms the larger the value of s, the shorter the bond lengths. It also indicates that the bonded interactions that govern the bond length variations behave as if largely short ranged. Like ρ(r(c))/r, the values of G(r(c))/r, V(r(c))/r, ∇(2)(r(c))/r likewise correlate in terms of R(M-O) in a single trend. With increasing pressure, the value of V(r(c)) decreases at a faster rate than G(r(c)) increases consistent with the observation that ρ(r(c)) increases with increasing pressure thereby stabilizing the structures at high pressures. As evinced by the well-developed power law trends between R(M-O) and the bond critical point properties, the bulk of the bonded interactions for the perovskites are concluded to change progressively from closed-shell to intermediate polar covalent interactions with increasing pressure. A well-developed trend between the ratios ∣V(r(c))∣ /G(r(c)) and H(r(c))/ρ(r(c)) is consistent with this conclusion. The employment of a positive value for the Laplacian alone in distinguishing between closed shell and polar covalent bonded interactions is unsatisfactory when 2G(r(c)) > ∣V(r(c))∣ > G(r(c)).
