The present studies characterize and evaluate the fracture toughness at the surface AISI 8620 with hard coating. The hard coatings FeB and Fe2B were formed using the boriding dehydrated paste at temperatures 1223 and 1273 K with 6 and 8 h exposure time, respectively. The presence of hard coatings formed on the surface AISI 8620 were confirmed by the classical metallographic technique combined with X-ray diffraction analysis. The distribution of alloying elements was determined by Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS). The fracture toughness of the hard coatings on AISI 8620 was estimated using a Vicker microindentation induced fracture testing of 15 and 35 μm from the surface, applying four load (0.49, 0.98,1.96 and N). The microcrack generated at the corner of the microindentation was considered as an experimental parameter and the tree model Palmqvist crack model was employed to determine the fracture toughness. The adherence of the hard coatings/substrate was evaluate in qualitative form though the VDI 3198 by testing Rockwell C and observed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The formation of hard layers was obtained in the range of 100-130 μm, results of XRD present phases FeB, Fe2B, CrB and MnB, the values obtained of Kc are in the range of 2.3 to 4.1 MPam1⁄2 and results of acceptable adhesion HF4 patterns for conditions 6 h of treatment
It is known that the diffusion of boron atoms on the surface of metals and alloys can increase the hardness, wear and corrosion resistance of engineering components. Boriding is an alternative method of sample treatment when the manual work required in powder boriding needs to be decreased. In addition, its advantage lies in high volumes of work and in selective treatments. Boron carbide consists of B4C (approximately 76 wt% boron). Using gases or powders as boronizing process gives rise to boride coatings constituted by an inner layer of Fe2B (hardness 15GPa) and an outer layer of FeB (hardness 25 GPa) [1,2]. Many industrial processes require the use of highly wear-resistant materials, tools steel, hot work being these basic Cr steels in applications such as extrusion dies for light alloys, matrices for pressing, forging dies and for molding plastic.
This study evaluates the behavior of the adherence layers -sawn flat iron boride formed on the surface of steels used in manufacturing industry in Mexico. In steels AISI 1018, AISI 8620 and AISI 316 was characterized this behavior, boriding thermochemical treatment with box technique, with a processing temperature of 1273 °K, with an exposure time of 8 hours. Furthermore the adherence is assessed by the Rockwell C hardness technique prescribed by the German standard VDI 3198 of traction, this impact test qualitatively determine the type of adherence formed three thermochemical steels treated by the technique of boriding. Moreover optical microscopy determines the type of film morphology FeB/ Fe 2 B of each of the materials exposed to a boriding, also shows the thicknesses of the phases generated in the surface type in all three steels boriding. Phase presence boride FeB/Fe 2 B was determined by X -ray diffraction (XRD). Technique for scanning electron microscopy (EDS) was evaluated qualitatively the presence of FeB/Fe 2 B of boronizing. Otherwise determines the hardness and elastic modulus by nanoindentation technique of the phases present in the three steels. Lastly, AISI 1018 and AISI 8620 are bounding scale H1 to H3, the AISI 316 steel has an adherence of H3 to H6 under German standard VDI 3198.
