In this article, we report a new 3‐D backlight display for glasses‐free 2‐D/3‐D switchable displays. In this type of 3‐D display, 3‐D works by line patterned back light unit. But light leakages from the 3‐D light guide cause degrade the 3‐D performance. We analyze the light leakages from light guide plate and suggest a novel backlight structure design to improve x‐talk performance.

The mechanism of a light leakage in the transparent LGP used for an autostereoscopic display is analyzed. The leaky light is divided into two factors according to the cause of extraction from the LGP . How the two factors affect the 3D crosstalk of the autostereoscopic display is examined based on the measured data of the prototype.

The optical characterization of the crosstalk and the light diffraction caused by a LCD panel of an autostereoscopic display based on a parallax barrier or line light sources is examined. The diffraction phenomenon is verified and the crosstalk reduction is achieved at the prototype.
